drats, my 170-mile race on Saturday was scrubbd because of family/work conflicts.

Tonight, I did a hillclimb time trial race, though. It's about 7.4 miles and about 1200 feet of vertical. Nothing major but the final 1.5 miles takes a significant turn uphill with a couple of switchbacks.

I'm terrible at climbing -- being 6-4 and weighing 190 is a bad combination for a cyclist going uphill -- but have to climb, climb, climb to get better.

No official time yet, but I dropped more than two minutes off my time from the previous TT. That's progress and I'll take it. I'm still six minutes behind the billy goats that show up for this race, though.

Had a pretty good workout in the pool today in training for my triathlon. Last week, I swam back-to-back (with a one-minute rest) 500s in 11 minutes each. Today I tried again, but could only do one pretty hard in 10 minutes.

I'm cutting the times down. 44 days to go until the tri.

Love Friday's: my wife has the day off and sometimes, like today, I can escape for several hours.

Did an awesome ride around the Alpine Loop in Utah. It might be the most awesome place to ride a road bike in the state and there is abundant awesomeness here.

Total ride, 99.5 miles 6721 feet of vertical.

I tell you, Ides, if there's one thing I miss about living in No. Arizona, it what you described. I could go two miles out of town and have a system of miles and miles and miles of forest service roads to ride on. Loved it. Just not the same in Va.

Here at the Cosmo home base, we're in the process of tightening up. Spent much of the summer out of control drinking too much too often, eating bad food late at night and not sleeping well enough. Shockingly enough (insert eyeroll) the weight ballooned to 251. I don't mind posting it publicly, because it'll hold me accountable. The strength training hasn't taken a hit. I've actually put on muscle during the summer and my gains in the gym have been pretty solid. But I need to knock off at least 26 pounds -- for starters -- and dedicate myself to living a more healthy lifestyle. So far so good this week. When I was in my best shape, probably about six years ago when I weighed 204, I cut the beer drinking down to once a week and stopped eating carbs after about 9 p.m. and drank a shit-ton of water. Trying that again. Even just after a week, I can tell I feel better, fresher. I'm always going to carry weight. I'm a big dude who lifts big. But I'm carrying far too much of it now. Time for that to change.

Has anyone done this P90X thing? I've heard a lot about it, mostly good, and I saw someone in the gym here at the office yesterday doing it in the cardio room. Looked pretty rough.

Boom is completely addicted, and the results are stunning (altho he was in great shape to start with). Probably best if you're already in shape and committed to staying with the program. Will get him to check in on this thread.

Have not had a drop of alcohol in six days, which is a stunning turn of events for me. It's probably been more than a year and a half since I've gone that long without a beer.

You know what? It feels great. I'm fresh in the morning. I'm crushing my workouts in the gym, lasting longer on the basketball court.

I can live with this. :)

If you want a complete intense cardion/ strength 6 day a week workout track PX90 is fantastic. Never have had a better programed workout.

You need to have visual access to DVD player where you workout to follow along. Equipment wise you won't need a lot. there are options of bands or dumbells.

You need to be somewhat in shape to get full benifits.

I ended up benching 226 (the weights were in kilos) on my last attempt and got a gift on it. I made the lift easily, but started before the head judge gave the "press" command. Still, two of the three judges called it good so it counted. It was a gift, but I'll take it and certainly learn from it. I've done that much in the gym, but in a meet, it was a PR.
I made all three of my lifts and took home a first-place trophy (I was the only guy in my age/weight/equipment division).

    Wow, that's a 500-pound lift. Nice work!
