Take care of yourself

    So a few days after a long, hard 206 mile day on the bike, I go out for a short, sweet, intense 10k time trial race.
    I hit it hard on the out, make the turn the combination of the headwind and tired legs drops my speed pretty rapidly.

    Still managed to grind out a decent time (pay no matter to the link, I didn't hit stop until a few seconds after I crossed the line) in the final TT of the season.
    PR is 15:39, I hope to drop it to 15:00 early next season.

    Just finished my 50th day of my insane P90X workout and I gained three pounds? What?!?!?

    Take your waist measurement. You may have gained muscle and lost some fat in the process.

    Three criterium races in one day = masochistic.

    I signed up for a Cat 4 (slow guys) race, a Masters 35B (old and slow guys) race and a Masters 35 (just old guys) race on Saturday. Each was a 40-minute gruntfest around a downtown city block -- kind of like NASCAR on two wheels.

    I flatted out of one race, got dropped by the leaders and lapped in another race and barely hung on in the last one.

    It was painful in a very good way and followed up by a full night of college football.

    I took home another first-place trophy in the bench press (again, only guy in my category). Happier that I went 3-for-3, with all white lights ( judges ruled them good lifts ) on all three lifts. And that last one, which tied my PR (I didn't train a lot for it) just flew off my chest.
    I wish I could squat and deadlift, too, but I'm getting my right knee scoped in December.

    Ladies, gents,

    This morning I woke up, seized the day and decided that it's time for me to go out and start being active again. I was an athlete in high school - football and basketball - that did not pursue either sport into college. It's been a few years since college graduation, and while I felt great throughout high school because I was in playing shape and mostly OK through college, I've lately started feeling lethargic and get minor aches and pains, and I'm really tired of it.

    It's been a few years since I've graduated college, which was the last time I was honest-to-God active (intramurals played a big part). I stepped back into a gym for the first time in what must have been four or five years this morning, and, unsure really of what to do, just got on a bike and rode 10 miles to get my legs back under me. I took a look around the place, took mental notes and called it a day.

    At this point, I figure it's best to meet with a personal trainer (the gym I joined, conveniently located just down the street, offers one complementary class) and see exactly what I want to do. I don't care much about personal appearance; I just want the satisfaction of feeling in shape again. When I was going full-out in my previous active life, I usually ran a mile to the gym, worked out for nearly 90 minutes by alternating days of arms, chest and back/legs, and then ran back. I'd like to do that again, I think, but I really don't remember every single exercise that made up that routine.

    Are there any recommendations right now of web sites I may be able to check out, tips I should know or anything of the sort? I'd like to start running 5Ks in the new year, begin hiking and doing more active things that will make me feel totally healthy again.

    A personal training session is always a good idea.
    Some good free resources on the web include ExRx.net, which lists several different exercises and sample programs, as well as advice on how to put together your own plan, and Stronglifts.com, which will help get you started on a basic barbell routine.

    Crashing on my bike scares me, mostly because I don't have faith that my hands/wrists would go unharmed. And what good is a writer if he/she can't write/type?

    And thus why ducky will likely never mountain bike. unless she changes careers first.

    Not sure if this belongs here but...

    After years of racing and running, I was tagged to actually become a race director. How hard could it be? Just get a few hundred of your favorite friends together for a run in the park, then hand out medals and hot chocolate.

    So now it's year three of the race and I've realized how much work it takes and how many people volumteer their time to let it happen. It's also a little bit of a logistic challenge since the race is held in the winter and at night.

    The good news is that hundreds of people show up, it's turned into a family event and Runners World featured the run in its December issue as one of the racces of the month. For this I get a hat and satisfaction that money is being raised and food collected for the local food bank.

    I've wanted to do that, too, Doc.

    But I want to promote a 4-stage bike race with a TT, Crit, Road Race and Circuit Race around my old home town in Idaho. I've been told the work is a lot more than you'd ever expect for a bigger event like that. A 5k is a ton of work, from what I understand, so coordinating a few hundred cyclists, the highway patrol, volunteers, etc. would be a daunting task.

    I'm thinking 2011 is when I'll give it a go.

    In other news, I've started working with a coach. He's a pro-level cyclist and a certified triathlon coach. He's going to show me how to get from Point A (Cat 4 midpack finisher) to a Cat 3 upgrade with 45-60 minutes shaved off my Ironman Boise 70.3 time as well.

    He's already throwing intervals at me like crazy

    Not really into swimming, so can anyone tell me how 500 yards relats to an olympic-size pool?

    I will sooon start the Navy Seals workout. Its goal is to swim 500 yards in 12:30, 50 (min)pushups in 2 mins, 50(min) situps in 2 mins, 8(min) pullups no time limit and 1.5 mile run (11:30 maximum, 9 mins or better is recommended).

    Its a nine-week program that builds up your stanima, but don't know how to figure out the swim part.
