First, you need to work your whole body. A strong core/trunk is essential to everything else. Don't neglect legs even though you run a lot.

Easiest thing to do is pushups, situps and squats. No equipment needed. Except, you know, clothes.

Agreed. If you can do them, pullups would be great, too.

Here is a great free site for workouts and nutrition tips:

Went with the 'simpler is better' workout. 4 sets of 25 situps, 25 pushups and 20 squats. Nothing to write home about, but it's a start.

So I found out yesterday that there's a CrossFit gym about 300 yards from my current gym. I had no idea.

Has anyone on here ever worked out at a CrossFit gym? I think it'd be fun, but I just can't see myself spending "$10-20 per class" on that? The benefit is, you get a big area with all the equipment. But that cost....man. I can't do all that stuff at my gym, but I can do enough to keep me happy, I think.

I mean, even if you go only twice a week, that's $80-160. I pay $20/month at my gym now and can go every day if I want (even though I obviously do not).

In December 2011, I worked out four or five times at my local CrossFit gym. Fucking humbling. The things we did as warmups had me gassed — and then we'd do the real WOD. But they'll make sure your form is correct on Olympic style lifts, so that's good.

I haven't gone again since then because the cost is just outrageous.

4 miles on the bike today, then 25-15-10 of squats, pushups, situps. It was a tough workout and I was certainly gassed, but I was surprised at how quickly I finished it. It's been a good minute since I've done a CF workout. Felt damn good, to be honest.

Yeah, I'm not down with the cost of the CrossFit boxes ... plus, I'm not quite in good enough cardio shape just to blow through some of the workouts without stopping to take my breath.

Did a WOD yesterday featuring three rounds of 30 pullups, 30 155-pound deadlifts and 30 box jumps. Good lord do my hamstrings hurt today.

I won't do today's WOD today because I'm all sorts of behind on the main site. But it looks awesome. Can't wait to get to it.

You mean the jump boxes? I just Googled them and yeah, that's outragous. You're better off building your own!

The box jumps are something I really need to incorporate into my workouts. I always sleep on those.

Sorry. The CrossFit gyms are generally referred to as "boxes." There's one here, but it's pricey, and I like being able to do the exercises on my own at the gym. I don't have access to things like rings, but let's face it, I'm probably not good enough to be doing full ring muscle-ups and what not anyway.

I've gotten a lot better at the box jumps. Great cardio push and good explosive movements. My hips have gotten a lot stronger from doing CrossFit exercises like kettlebell swings, box jumps and thrusters.

Oh, my bad. But yeah, I'm in the same boat on just about everything you mentioned. I'm just not ready to go full-blast at a CF gym. The idea of it is very appealing, though. I think I can do enough of the exercises at my gym, like you, to get by.
