I'm with 21 ... also, scales can only mess with your mind and a weight scale won't measure the inches you're losing.

My advice - run up and down stadium stairs - any place with stairs, and do it outside where it's nice and you're not stuck on a stationary machine.

In high school I had a track coach who also coached football. He had us do "the stadium" before and after practice and I lost 20lbs within a month.

Keep up the good work Lugnuts!

Unfortunately, I wouldn't. I'd be constantly worried. Keeping tabs on myself this way has kept me from gaining alot of weight. We all have our systems.

There may be a few healthier ways to keep tabs.

One way is buying a body fat analyzer ($75-$150) and using it daily. I've used an OMRON HBF-306 for several years. I've compared it to calipers (much to expensive for personal use) and over time it is just as accruate. The BFA is a more accurate measurement of health than your weight for all the reasons 21 and Sxy mentioned.

    Good luck in Vegas.

Great, I'll measure my body fat every morning... right after I get off my scale. ;D Seriously, it's a habit I cannot break. And if it's kept me from gaining more than 15 lbs. since high school... I don't see it as unhealthy. Hey- I didn't weigh myself the morning of surgery-- I'm not that bad. ;D Thanks, though.

I have a general gym ettiquette question.
While I know all about asking to work in with people, is it still better to give some deference to people who are more advanced or in better shape than you?
If you're out of shape or a beginner and just need to do a set or two on a given piece of equipment and it's being used to somebody who is obviously more advanced and it doesn't look like he (or she) will be finished with the equipment anytime soon, is it better to leave them alone and find another exercise for the same body part? Would they be likely to have a problem if you ask to work in with them?
Also, are the more popular machines in the gym necessarily the best or most effective ones?

It's totally within your right to ask. Either to person will say sure and move over or she will say, "let me finish this set." If she wants to be an ass (which most people aren't) about it, don't sweat it. Move to the next exercise then come back to that one.

The only time I don't like to share is if I'm doing something such as lying hamstring curls and a person who is 5 feet 3 wants to work in. Or I'm doing squats (working out with 315+) and a person who might work up to 185 wants in. I just hate taking the time to adjust the pad placements on the machine and pull off, put on, pull off, put on all those plates.

But, I've never said, "No you can't work in."

Working in on machines, or the back extension stand, or the dips/pull-ups station, no biggie at all. You can flow in and out seamlessly. Or, if you see someone doing 135 on the decline press, and that's all you want to do, cool, go for it.

If you want to do 155 on the bench and you see someone who is doing 315, it's best to just wait. :)

Schweet. I ordered 30 over the weekend. My supply of 30 ran out - but all of my kids' friends are wearing them now.

Birdscribe, I still owe you. Kids cleaned me out.
