Monday I ate fast food (other than Subway) for the first time in I-don't-know-how-long, probably three months. Long story ... running between this interview and that game with no time to slow down -- you know the routine.

Stopped off at Wendy's around 9 p.m. or so and got the No. 4 combo (bacon burger, fries, large Coke).

    :-X

Mistake. Big mistake. My stomach's been complaining through its shop steward ever since. I hope it will shut up eventually. But I'm going to take the hint.

This isn't a food-poisoning thing, either. Just a stomach saying, "WTF was that? Don't ever send any of that down the elevator again, dude!"

How the hell did we decide that shit was good to eat? I think I'm not going to sample fast food again anytime soon.

I eat fast food about ... oh ... maybe once every two weeks or so, and it seems to have the same colonic bullet train effect on me, 2much.

And small, I find Men's Health copy to be sarcastic, but it never reads consescending to me. But that's just my opinion ...

Whenever my Dad took us kids to Burger King, he'd always have a Whaler fish sandwich, as an alternative to the really bad stuff. And he'd suffer anyway.

It wasn't later in life I understood why you can't eat fast food after the age of 30.

You mean, at 9/23/55, that Angus Burger and onion rings I just picked up at Burger King was a bad idea?

I eat fast food like five times a week, although I stopped doing it twice a day and eat frozen dinner type things at home for lunch.

Maybe it's just what you're used to.

Somebody please teach me how to get out of this rut:

I work a desk shift from 4 to about 1 a.m. I get home usually eat something I shouldn't and go to bed by 3. I get up at like noonish and don't eat the entire day until I get to work and usually pig out on fast food.

It's horrible! What kind of routine do the rest of you follow?

Rusty--You need to eat earlier, and stop eating earlier as well.

You're up at noon, that's breakfast...some carbs for energy (fruit, whole wheat toast, etc) and some protein (eggs, peanut butter, lean meats). A couple hours later, a small snack....a banana, handful of nuts, protein bar...no sweets or white breads. Around 4, that's 'lunch'--pick up a salad or sandwich that's not fried or loaded with grease. Another snack around 6 or 7, and dinner around 10.

That would put you on the same basic schedule as a civilian. If you're hungry after 10 (and who isn't), look for something that isn;t loaded with sugar....it will just melt into fat, since you won't be using the carbs for energy that late at night.

    21,

I do pretty good foodwise (and healthwise), but help settle a debate for me.

You mention peanut butter. There's a reduced fat peanut butter that I hate. Tastes grainy to me. Don't like organic. I like, plain and simple Creamy Jif. The significant other says "bad for you!". So I say fuck it and go without while she samples the grainy stuff (then, because she doesn't like it either, pawns it off on the dogs when they need to take heartworm pills).

The question: If one was to have peanut butter, regular Jif, what's that good for - once a week? Twice? I generally like it on rye bread , not a ton, but more than a scraping. You tell me.

An element in this debate is that we've reached a compromise on another condiment, ketchup, that leans in my favor.

I hate all 'reduced fat' products, because when they take something out, they have to put something back in...usually in the form of sugar. Check the labels, sometimes the 'fat free' versions have more calories than the original.

Peanut butter, of course it's bad for you, there are 16g of fat in a 2 TB serving (and let's be serious, who can stop at 2 TB?). But 'bad' is all relative, right? You're better off with a spoonful of peanut butter than a spoonful Ben & Jerrys. And in moderation, hell, you're a grown man, eat what makes you happy.

I have no problem with it, because the rest of my diet is very low in fat, and we need some fat. The main problem with peanut butter is that it's high in saturated fat, so if you have a cholesterol problem, then the sig-other is probably correct.

As for ketchup, it's just red sugar, but really how much can you consume? Unless you're chugging it from the bottle, what's the harm??

Rusty, I know the feeling. I worked that shift for years (many of us in sports do). I relax sometimes by eating. But I did much better when I had my last meal at work, then forced myself to NOT EAT after I got home.

It's hard as hell, but I found I slept better, lost weight and felt healthier.

Come up with another awesome way to unwind when you get home. Soak in a hot tub, make your bed a haven with lots of great reading material, kill a kitten... and when all else fails... you can occasionally try this...

Once I was telling a makeup artist I used to work with about how I could NOT stop myself from eating when I got home from work. She was a former fashion model.

I said, "When I get home, I'm soooo hungry."

And she said, "Then take 2 Advil and go to bed."

I'll be damned-- it works. It kills hunger pain immediately and knocks me right out.
