you bring up an interesting point that i'm curious about....
should you eat after your workout?
i used to workout after dinner and seemed to get better results thenworking out, then going home and having dinner.

Sort of a chicken/egg question. Ideally, you work out first thing in the am, after eating very little (maybe some lean protein, egg whites) or nothing at all. Why? Because you have very little excess sugar to burn up, so you get to the fat faster. However, because your blood sugar is lower, you may feel weaker, and have less energy. But you'll jack up your metabolism, so you can eat more all day and burn more efficiently.

On the other hand, if you work out at the end of the day, after eating, you've been storing glycogen (sugar) all day and may have more energy....but you'll have to burn it off before you get to the fat. So you can work out longer, but you'll have to anyway.

You work out when it fits your schedule. If you do that regularly, watch what you eat and stay away from fast-food crap, you'll be more fit and haalthier.

This question is directed to the runners out there:

After about 10-15 minutes of running on the treadmill, the inside curve of my right foot starts to ache and cramp up. Same for my right shin. My lead foot is my left foot, so it's my right foot that follows ...

If it wasnt for this "ailment," I would be able to run for another 20-25 minutes without getting tired. As it is, I have to stop because there's so much feeling weird in my right leg/foot .... any suggestions/thoughts?

I'm slightly overweight (15-20 lbs) and am looking for some good starter exercises to get back into shape.

I'd like to do something other than just running, and am looking into weight training.

What are some good exercises, etc to begin with?

    Thanks

    N,
I'd start with the exercises that work the largest parts of your body: the legs (squats, lunges and leg presses are the best bets), chest (bench press), back (pulldowns and/or rows) and abs (crunches). Pick one of those exercises for each of those body parts and you'll hit every muscle in your body, directly or indirectly. When you do a bench press, you're also working your shoulders and triceps. When you work your back with pulldowns or a bent over row, you're also working your biceps.
If you want some other good ideas for workouts, get Bill Pearl's book Getting Stronger. It has dozens of workouts and at least one of them is bound to suit your needs. It's the most complete, if not the best, book on weight training out there.

About the yellow bracelets....got this email today (signed by Lance A) thanking me for my purchases of them:

Thank you for supporting LIVESTRONG™ and the Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF). Your purchase of LIVESTRONG™ wristbands helped raise more than 20 million dollars -- money we're already putting to use to make a difference in the lives of the 10 million people battling cancer.

Through the success of the LIVESTRONG™ wristband campaign, the LAF has been able to:

--Make a $1 million gift to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute to establish the LAF Adult Survivorship Clinic. The clinic will provide comprehensive services to help adult survivors LIVE STRONG.
--Award Community Program grants totaling more than $1 million to 39 different non-profit organizations in four specific areas: adolescent and young adult issues, physical activity, survivorship education and support, and palliative and end of life care.
--Support development of LIVESTRONG™, a resource for cancer survivors. LIVESTRONG™ is a free educational program of the LAF created to provide cancer survivors with access to the resources they need to LIVE STRONG.

Where's the easiest place to get one of these? I want to get one, but can't find any.

Sly, it might be your shoes? I know that's like asking someone if their computer is plugged in when it isn't working, but you never know. I've had problems like that come and go -- one year, the top of my right foot ached so bad that I never knew if I'd be able to keep training. Another time it was my ankle.

A friend of mine last weekend told me the top of her foot would hurt when she exercised. She went to the doctor and they found she had a dislocated small bone in her foot. They popped it in right there, and no problems since!

On a related topic, anyone notice the NY Times article today on Lance's ex-wife running the NYC Marathon (sorry, the ING NYC Marathon) this weekend? Interesting read.
