OK all, Thanksgiving is a week away, which means a lot of people lose their will to work out and eat healthy.

Honestly, splurging during the holidays is cool. That's part of the charm of things. But maintaining some sort of workout plan is critical. If not, those 10 pounds will fly on you like nothing.

I'm saying this too pump myself up to keep going to the gym as I'm lecturing other people, BTW. :)

I had a couple of things to say...

Quick recap: I've lost about 120 pounds since last fall, mostly from altering my food intake (not necessarily type of food) and exercising very regularly. Grinding, hellacious exercise. Running stairs and playing hewps.

But now it's getting cold where I live and I can't get out anymore. It's the first time I have dealt with this. The weather was warming up when I started with the exercise.

I played basketball every day in the heat (didn't get much better) and stayed in great shape. Now I'm starting to tail off with my cardio because I'm so pissed that it's cold. I don't really have a gym. No indoor court. Too cold now to play outside. No inline skating, either. Too cold. I'm so bitter. Is there a job open in Belize?

No punchine. I'm just pissed that I can't ball outside anymore and I see bad things developing in my immediate fitness future.

    (From the birthday thread)

Well, it's basically stopped. I went 25 pounds below my goal. So that's good. Overall, I've gone from low 300s to 190. I was as low as 186, but that was during a starving phase. Stupid.

Been weightlifting more, which makes official "weight loss" somewhat difficult. But my fat % contines to drop. And my clothes slowly get bigger.

I know this has nothing to do with birthdays. So I moved it here.

**If anyone wants tips from a reformed fat bastard (all other inquiries should go directly to 21) I'll be glad to help. If you're fat, you don't have to be. I was the poster boy.

And, honestly, if you get serious in the beginning ... all the changes become part of your life. Staying thin gets a lot easier. You might think it'll be hell everyday, but it's really not.

    PaseanaARG,

That's an awesome story. Big congrats to you.
My fiance just lost 50 pounds in the last six months and she feels better than she has her entire life. She now weighs as much as she did her senior year in high school.
It really is a fulfilling feeling.

Passy, dude, that's awesome. That's a huge amount of weight to drop. Jeez, you must look like a different person.

As for winter... I've got five months of it to deal with up here. Most of my working out is in a boxing club, so not too much to worry about.

But -- and I don't know if snow comes along with the cold where you're at -- but cross-country skiing is incredible exercise. A full-body workout, like swimming, nice and balanced, great cardio, pretty easy to pick up.

I might be remembering this wrong, but I think among high-level athletes, cross-country skiers have the biggest hearts -- bigger even than long-distance cyclists. It's crazy exercise.

Jones, you're right about cross country skiing. It's unreal cardio exercise. Heck, even downhill skiing is good exercise (not as good as XC, of course). Anyone that thinks it's just sliding down a hill is wrong. Tons of turning, working of the quad/thigh muscles, etc. Great workout.

    Two things:

That's kind of a major fuckup, methinks.

So are we or are we not getting fatter?

I guess the whole amputated-fingers bit takes the edge off having washboard abs.

2much ... ab machine, no ab machine, you ain't gettin' no washboard abs without cutting down majorly on your eating.

    I have strong abs.

I do not have washboard abs. I like beer too much. :)

This afternoon when I was using the eliptical machine, I noticed I had to work a lot harder to get my heart rate into the training zone.
Is that a sign of improvement or that I'm getting worse? Or does it mean nothing?
Also, at the lower end of the zone (65 percent according to the 220-my age formula) it feels really hard and I'm sweating really heavily. I'm not even sure if I can reach the upper end of 80 percent and maintain it for any length of time.
Could I be one of those people that the formula does not apply to?
By the way, in February I was 299. Now I'm 228. Now I just have to lose those last 60 vanity pounds.

    Pas,

Just had to say I hope you stick with your exercise routine, even in the cold of winter. I was starting to worry about you when I noticed you hadn't posted much during a recent stretch.

Glad to know you're still with us.

Oh, and I am awed by what you've accomplished.

Damn beat work keeps me from the posting hobby.

On a positive note, the basketball teams look really bad.

I'll play hoops until it just isn't feasible any longer, then I'll go to elliptical. Sucks. But it must happen. My quest for 15% body fat continues.

(My basketball skills are incredibly poor compared to how often I play. Ask FuerteJ about it.)

SMALL_POT: You own. Well done on the weight loss. As far as today's workout, I'd chalk that up to random bullshit. I have occasional days (maybe once per month) when my body just doesn't work properly and a malaise envelops me. Energy that generally is in surplus is completely gone. I don't understand why. Just happens.

Try again in a day or two. If it's still messy then, let us know.

Needing to work harder to get your heartrate up is a great thing.

In other words, a Kenyan marathoner can run 8 minute miles and never break a sweat, or go above minimal heartbeats.

I try that these days, and I'm going 160.

Your situation is a good one.
