21 is going to take a shot at this, as soon as she finishes gagging. She is terrified of milk.

Adam, no one NEEDS to drink milk. In fact, many nutritionists believe it's completely undigestable in adults. But milk has calcium and Vitamin D, both of which you need, and you can get them from a simple supplement. I am addicted to Viactiv, the chewable little treats, each with 500 mg of calcium, and come in AMAZING flavors. But you can take it in pill form as well, which is what most MDs recommend for adults.

That said, if milk doesn't bother you, have at it....but mix your own chocolate into it, don't buy the pre-mixed, it will have lot more sugar than if you use a small amount of your own. (Personal note, what has happened to Bosco, does it still exist?)

Nolesfan (are you dyslexic or am I?), plain popcorn is just empty calories, until you add butter/salt. Then it's full of calories.

As for nuts, cashews, macadamias and pine nuts are the most fatty...walnuts are among the least. But all nuts have some good fats and nutrients, and I would rather eat a cup of nuts than a bowl of pasta anyday. One day I will share with you my theory that Peanut M&Ms are a complete and balanced meal.

Okay, maybe I spoke too vaguely. Nobody needs to drink milk. Hell nobody needs to eat veggies, either. I've taken tons of nutrition classes and done two half-ironman triathlons so when I speak, I'm coming from a pretty knowledgeable background.

Milk is a little rough on my stomach, but I still think it's necessary. There is no exact science in nutrition, every person and every nutritionist will say something different. Milk is one of those foods high in the essential amino acids. Yeah, you can get them from supplements, pills, potions and what have you. However, the complete protein foods are the best source...meat and dairy products.

Everyone has their own theories but I'd be willing to put my diet and knowledge up against most of them and bet I come out on top...still it's all about personal likes and needs.

And no disrespect because I know you're one of the higher-ups on here...but I can only take someone's nutrition advice so seriously when they say they have a theory about Peanut M&Ms being a complete meal.

I wasn't aware there was a competition for the 'diet and knowledge' category, but let me know what you win.

And no disrespect to you either, but I really cannot take anyone seriously who doesn't appreciate the beauty of the peanut M&M.

  4. Re: Take care of yourself (LiveSTRONG)

Wow, I don't know what to say to that. I'm not winning any competition....but I know what it takes to get in peak condition. Nobody will ever agree on nutrition, so I think it's wrong to flat-out reject what someone says on the subject. That's what you did, and that's fine.

I don't really eat candy, so my apologies that I can't appreciate peanut m&ms.

    I'm speechless.

For the record, I don't touch milk. Ever. I mean EVER. Just not worth it for me. The Atkins Advantage shakes give me way more than milk -- without all the sugar I'm trying to avoid.

    EDIT:
Oh, how I love the young pups and their whole "me>you" attitude.

  6. Re: Take care of yourself (LiveSTRONG)

THis is the last thing I'm gonna write about this because it's ruining a damn good thread. Any time someone tells me "Many nutritionists...whatever," while, I am gonna respond swinging to that. I got a minor in nutrition, doesn't mean crap. Everyone is a freakin' expert on the subject so what "many" believe, "many" also disagree with.

I'm simply stating my opinions backed up by facts. That's not to say if you're lactose intolerant you NEED to swig milk with breakfast every morning. But, like I said, there are whole proteins (amino acids) that are in milk naturally and not in a lot of other foods. People make this big to do about protein, but protein does very little without all 22 amino acids present. The body produces 12 in sufficient quantity, the rest have to be consumed by food. To me, the best way is natural...not pills and supplements. I know all the research out there about amino acid supplements, but I just eat food and do fine.

Plenty of muscle men, trainers and regular folks will disagree. Like I said, that's fine. But I don't believe you can flat-out dismiss theories because other people do. That's all, rip away.

    EDIT:

I love the elders I know things that you don't know just because I've been on the earth longer.

    Second EDIT:

Because I'm not adding another post to this nonsense, it's an attitude, not a direct quote so I took the quote marks off. I'm doing just fine with the milk, 5.5% body fat a resting heart rate of 54 bpm. I'm no expert but I'd say that puts me in the non-slob category. Face it, milk does a body good...even though your favorite nutritionists don't believe it.

I'm not going to come on here and pretend like I know everything and can dispense nutrition advice, but I do know quite a bit. Take what I say with a grain of salt though, do what's best for you.

I can't find that quote anywhere, please use quote function next time so we can follow along.

Best of luck with the milk.

    Me too:

    Let's take a gander here.

First number is the Winn-Dixie chocolate milk my 2-year-old daughter drinks. Second number is Hood Carb Countdown "chocolate dairy beverage".

    FAT: 8g/4.5g
    CARBS: 31g/3g
    SUGAR: 11g/2g
    CALORIES: 230/100
    PROTEIN: 9g/12g
    CALCIUM: 300mg/350mg

    The end.

And yea, there's no need to mess up a damn good thread ...

  9. Re: Take care of yourself (LiveSTRONG)

Okay I feel compelled to respond to that. Now my advice was mix half chocolcate with half 1% or skim milk. I don't drink chocolate milk, I drink skim. So say we take my advice with the skim and mix it with chocolate.

    FAT: 4g
    CARBS: 21g
    SUGAR: 11g
    CALORIES: 195
    PROTEIN: 8.5g
    CALCIUM: 375mg

Then, eventually, those bad numbers drop because you progressively drink less chocolate milk.

Milk isn't a good source for carbs, anyway. I still don't understand for the life of me what is bad about carbs that there are all these "Carb free" and "Carb countdown" products. Folks do what you want. If chocolate milk is what you like, by all means drink it. I'm not someone who tells others what to do and not to do. Plenty of people have sent me messages that what I'm saying is right and "Way to stick up the the big shots on here." I don't really care, either way.

Dammit, I haven't gone to the gym all week. How do you guys motivate yourselves when you'd rather just sit around and relax. It seems I've kept myself perpetually busy and so staying home seems like an easy way to chill. And for crying out loud I only live a literally two minute drive from the place. Ugh!

Slumping Butthead ... I have a good friend. One night, we were out having beers and we were both somewhat buzzed. So she repeats a line from a movie (can't remember which one), and says, "hokie, you're a pussy!" and starts erupting in laughter.

Every time I try to skip the gym, I hear her voice saying, "hokie, you're a pussy!" and I go.

    So Headbutt, you're a pussy! :D

One of these nearby gyms I frequent just added a pair of Cybex Arc Trainers.
    http://www.ecybex.com/products/CV/ArcTrainer/arctrainer.aspx

That bastard can kick your ass if you want. Fire up that resistance to 55, jack the incline to 7 and see how long you can pump at 110 strides per minute.

    [me=PaseanaARG]struggled after about 20 minutes.[/me]

Also, I love the phrase "deconditioned athletes."
