    Excellent post, Star.

One thing about grocery shopping. Be smart about it. Have a plan in mind when you go to the store so you don't buy a bunch of food that's bad for you.

When I go, I try to plan a week's worth of dinners. I end up buying just what I need. Don't buy fresh vegetables unless you're going to use them in a day or two. Frozen is just as healthy for you. Stay out of the candy aisle. The temptation is too great, especially when things are on sale. As Adam wrote, he doesn't get the jones for sugary stuff much any more. Well, I do, so I need to stay the hell out of that aisle. I did have a bag of peanut butter M&Ms this week, but just one. As borntorun wrote, all good things in moderation.

Now if you'll excuse me, I've got beer to drink. ;D

    Star,

I know you don't want to basque in well-wishes but congrats man! Even for those of use who have never struggled with weight issues you're an inspiration. And many wishes on continued success on keeping up the awesome work.

I don't get the "jones" for sugary stuff, but beer is my weakness. So I avoid the alcohol aisle at kroger, especially because there is always some decent brand on sale. Since June I've done pretty well about not drinking at my apartment, only at the bars. Once this dang football season ends my bar attendance should be reduced and I'm really going to try and do the booze thing on rare occassions.

We'll see what happens. Oh and I had my first buffalo burger today. Great, great stuff! Little mustard on there, slice of lettuce, tomato and onion and it was tasty. :)

Starman really does own everyone. Just amazing.

I was on a 1,500-cal "diet" initially, and I thought that was a bitch.

500 calories? Above and beyond my capabilities.

My big twist: Now that I'm below my target weight and now just trying to please myself with extra toning and the satisfaction of knowing that no cardio machine can contain me -- I've changed my eating habits. Rather than be scared of carbs, I embrace them. At times.

If I'm going to do one of these marathon workouts (90 mins. of weightlifting, 90 mins. of cardio and 30 minutes of pilates/stretching, crunches), I sit down and eat a big ol' bowl of rice two hours before. What a difference that makes!

If your weight is in check and you want power, why not?

It's cool to diet and it'll work if you stay with it. At some point, though, you gotta give your body some fuel. I found myself getting weak after months on an Atkins-type diet. You can't hate carbs forever. They can be your friend, too.

    I second that.

Starman, that is AWESOME. I really needed to read something like that, after lagging a bit on my diet the past three days. You're the man, that is just fuckin awesome.

Ok, I have an accomplishment and a question. First the accomplishment. Tonight, for the first time since I can remember, I touched my toes from a stand position with my legs straight!

Now, now...it sounds dumb, even dorky. But I have pretty short arms and have never been that flexible. I always stretched before practices, games and events but kinda hit and miss during workouts on my own. Well, I finally wised up and started stretching regularly at the end of last June...kept it up since then and I can touch the toes now :) This isn't gonna inspire you like Starman probably did but it goes to show goals can be reached.

Ok, now a question. Without going into too much detail it isn't about me. I have a girlfriend and we don't live in the same city. She's not really overweight, persé, but she could lose a little. Because I don't want to get my lights punched out I've never said anything. What she eats is tough, she lives in a sorority and M-F is meals cooked for her. Plus she's at college and the next person to eat good at college will be the first :D

So my question, finally: How do you approach someone you care about and encourage them to workout more and try to be a little healthier? Keep in mind it's a she and not a he so saying "hey fatass, get off the couch" isn't gonna fly like it would with me. Any insight or advice is greatly appreciated as are the goofy responses.

Poke her belly and go "hehe!" like the Pillsbury Dough Boy.

Or, don't, if you value your life. :-\

Well, you could always ... no, that won't do.
Well, you could tell her to ... no, too dishonest.
Well, you could always ... no, she would kill you.

Hope that helps. I wish you (and our Steelers) luck, Adam. ;D

Haha just as I figured. Awwh well, she's still a cute girl and if we ever start living together I figure she'll come to the gym or the park with me and get more active. Until then I'll let her enjoy the late-night pizza and tacos that college has to offer.

Lotsa people here are more knowledgeable than me, but Adam, I say the most underrated part of the workout is stretching. If I'm pressed for time, I always factor in stretching and gear my workout accordingly rather than the other way around.
    Then again, I'm getting old.
But I love to hear people who have "seen the light."

And Starman, I'm amazed by stories like yours. I have always prided myself on having the discipline (and the genes) to stay in shape and avoid plumping up. I doubt I'd have the discipline to do what you did.
You da man. Pas, you da other man now.

My wife was the same way for a while. It bugged me to no end. I'm on the other end, almost a heath freak - which probably annoys her.

Anyway, I told her we're going spending a week in Cancun then a week in Rio for our summer vacation. The tickets and hotel information were in the Christmas card I gave her.

Hell, she started running Christmas morning and has been in the gym five days each week since.

Not saying you have the spend that kind of coin (hell, I'm not spending it, Marriott points are wonderful things) but you could think of some tangible incentive for her to get in better shape.

I will admit I haven't read this thread at all and don't really know what the current talk is about (I know not what I am about to write about) but I have a request.

I was playing in a rec bball game last Thurs and I had to take off my livestrong band because of the no jewlery rule. Well it turns out it fell out of my bag and I have one no more. Does anyone on here have an extra band that I can pay for - I don't want to pay like 10 bucks for one on ebay, i don't need 10 and the stores around where i live don't have any. please pm if you can help.

    Thanks so much.
