Good luck. As someone whose gym is 24 hours during the work week, you'll grow to see how convenient that is, especially with all of our wacky, zany hours. Many times I've worked out at midnight.

congrats on getting started. that's a huge first step. don't beat yourself up if you don't see immediate results.

i agree about changing your eating habits. so many people overlook that or cheat a bit. the main thing is to be true to yourself: if you're still eating that fourth meal every day right before bed, you're only deceiving yourself.

I'm 10 pounds up from normal (still thin, but I can feel it). An Ironman looms in 16 weeks. Thanks for the resurrection. To the bike I go...

    And go get 'em, Xan.

If I can afford it I'm going to get a membership at a local gym come Monday or Tuesday (I'm going out of town and don't know when I'll be back...haven't decided yet). I've been in touch with a gym that gives student discounts, but I'm not sure how much of a discount.

Two years ago, I weighed 165 pounds. Now, I'm up to 225.

I simply have no motivation to change my eating habits -- heavy on fast food and sodas -- and not sure why. I almost need my physician to say 'you're in bad shape...you NEED to do something' to get going.

Where do you folks draw inspiration from, 'cause I certainly could use some.

I tried another gym last week because I've been thinking about giving competitive powerlifting a whirl and the place I tried is a small hardcore place that specializes in that sort of thing.
I'm glad I went because a trainer helped me with my squat technique, hopefully saving my knees from any more damage than they've already suffered. It turns out that I've never learned to squat correctly. The guy took me back to square one, having my squat to a bench with just a broomstick on my back. Then he had me work my core muscles and do a lot more stretching than I normally do.
I'm not sure when I'll be able to go back there. The membership costs a little more than my current one (and I'm on the hook there until July) and it's a little out of the way compared to my current gym.
I really have nothing bad to say about my current gym. It's served me well with my weight loss and general fitness goals, but for the direction I think I want to go, it's probably not the best place and in one day at this other place, I learned so much more than I ever learned anywhere else.
Oh, and by the way, next Sunday, one day shy of my 40th birthday, I'm climbing the stairs at the John Hancock Tower in Boston (62 floors) in the Go Vertical Boston event.

Good luck with that, SP. Lord knows I wouldn't be able to do that...

Eating is the worst part for me. You'd be horrified if you knew my diet. I eat enough mashed potatoes to feed a small army — an hour before bed — and wash it down with 4 pieces of fried chicken and 25-50 chocolate-covered Oreos. I did that for a few weeks straight. Other nights I'd eat a big steak for dinner and then an hour later slurp down an entire (large) can of raviolis just for the hell of it.

I wish I had an answer for you, Nick. But I think it just comes down to dedication. I've been able to quit drugs, cigarettes, alcohol, but food has always seduced me.

After today's workout I went to the supermarket salad bar and made a big salad with fat-free Italian dressing. We'll see how well this attitude toward a better diet goes.

How badly do you want to lose weight, Nick?

Like you, Songbird, it's all about eating. I don't have a problem exercising, don't drink (rare for someone in his mid-20s) and have never touched a cigarette.

I have a doctor's appointment in two weeks. Hopefully, that will get my mind right.

While people like Tony Robbins bug me, he is right about one thing: We usually do whatever we do to seek pleasure or avoid pain. Eventually, the pain of staying on the path you're on has to exceed the pleasure you get from staying on it.
Once that happens, you're good to go.

You'll be fine. You can do it, Nick.
