Anybody else try the workout at the back of the June issue of Men's Health? It was a 20-minute, two circuit deal in the article dealing with the sports performance training institute in Tempe. Fantastic workout. Left me all sorts of sore. Good stuff.

    Those aren't cyclists. They're nutjobs :D

I asked, however, because I'm slowly developing a love for long rides. It seems my time in the spinning studio is well spent. Hills and sustained climbs on the road bike have been no real problem lately, though I admit I'm not exactly doing the climb up Little Cottonwood Canyon to Snowbird.

I hope you wear a helmet -- even in studio .

Idaho, some of the best biking I've ever done was in Utah (I can't keep up, you are in Utah, yes?)....take a trip over to Park City, bring your bike up on the Deer Valley gondola....a great time.

Somewhat novice biker here, picked it back up earlier this year after probably not touching one since I was 13. Love-love-loved the two-wheeler when I was a kid; that and playing sports year-round kept me in fantastic shape most of my life.

Moved in with the not-as-athletically-inclined girlfriend two-plus years ago and quickly went from 190 to 220, and not any of it muscle. (The bedroom's a calorie-burner, but it ain't gonna keep the weight off by itself!) Pushed up to 230, 240 -- we didn't have a scale -- and, fortunately I think, hit a plateau around there. The girl's now an ex, I'm on my own, and I've started getting back in shape, slowly but surely. Back kills me if I run long distances (knees aren't much better), so my weapon of choice is the two-wheeler again. Bought a used mountain bike for $10 on Craigslist, had it spiffed up with new tubes, new brakes, new chains, et al, for about $75 at a bike shop.

Eating (a little bit) better lately -- that's as much a challenge as anything -- and back down to 225 after three months of singledom. The goal is 200, but I'm not in a huge rush. More concerned with being active and changing the lifestyle than "hitting a number." Been around too many people that drop 30 pounds in eight weeks, then put it right back on.

As far as biking, right now I ride about 5 days a week around the neighborhood or the local college (2-5 miles, depending on how long I go.) Gets the blood flowing, gets the legs pumping, nothing too severe for you experienced bikers. But it gets me active again, on an almost daily basis, and that's my concern. ... Love this thread.

In the three months I've had my current gym membership, I've yet to see an exercise bike anywhere. I think tomorrow when I go I'll check upstairs in the semi-private workout area they have.

Anyone else's gym offer free satellite radio while you're doing cardio?

I've had to alter the cardio because the left knee feels like it's going to buckle if I keep running. Now I'm doing StairMaster (level 8 for 30 minutes) and following up with 30 minutes on eliptical (cross country level 5 or 6) or 30 minutes of the treadmill, fast walking at 4.0 speed. If I'm feeling overly ambitious, I'll do all 3 and burn about 1300 cals. I want to keep running but know I'd kill the knee.

But as the sweet girl at the gym said, a calorie is a calorie, so what does it matter if your run it off, or use the StairMaster? She's right.

Just joined a basketball league. First run was tonight where we picked teams. I had been running about 2 miles 3-4 times a week and i thought i'd be ready for action.

    Not even close.

Basketball is a great, great workout.

Or, grab a mountain bike and head over to Moab. Some of the best days of my life were the three I spent riding around Moab about eight summers ago.

I decided to go with a road bike for my investment in health. I like the speed associated with the leg work. That bike would not hold up to a trip down the mountain. So I've been hitting the highways around the town and valley lately. Good times. I've got a friend that is trying to talk me into doing a century with him. I know I could go all 100 miles, I just don't know if I want to. :-\

I've been Mtn, biking and wouldn't mind renting a bike and going up and down the trails at Snowbird, Park City or (m favorite) Big Sky in Montana.

And I do wear a helmet at all times unless I'm indoors doing the spinning class.

I don't know how far you are from Park City, but they do have the World's Longest Zipline there....2000 feet of sheer terror. Best time I've ever had hanging from a cable, I think.
