I'm normally a black coffee kinda girl, but on occasion I get the urge to lighten up my coffee when it's too strong. I've used vanilla soy over skim for years. It actually makes your coffee taste a little bit richer, while somehow being more healthy. Best of both worlds. My mom's convinced of it now too.

Just use fat-free milk. Most soymilk (silk, etc.) has fat.

And nonfat yogurt is an AWESOME food. One of the all-time perfect pre-cardio fuels.

I've been a vegetarian for 14 years. Pretty much vegan for at least the last year, actually. I am convinced soy is evil, though. It's OK in moderation, but all of the fake soy products--including soy milk--might as well be made out of plastic for all they put those soy beans through before they mold it into whatever it is supposed to be. I also think too much soy for a man isn't good. It boosts your estrogen levels to a level that can not be healthy for a guy.

Ragu...do you know of any soy products that are "good" (organic?)

I actually like soy chocolate milk.

Slightly different topic, but the what-goes-in-the-coffee discussion reminded me:

Amazing story in a recent New Yorker about fake sugars---Equal, Splenda, Nutra-Sweet, etc--and how they're basically the equivalent of Windex, how they've been discovered by accident (during manufacturing of lethal poisons), and how nearly impossible it is to replicate the quality of sugar.

I don't use any 'sugar-free' products (except Equal in the coffee), and consume very little sugar altogether, but this story made scared for everyone who drinks the diet sodas and loads up on sugar-free products because they're 'healthier.' I actually switched back to raw sugar for the coffee.

I need to find the link.

I certainly don't drink diet soda because it's healthy. I drink it because of my pathetic caffeine addiction ... it's better than drinking two 20 oz. regular sodas that pack 350 calories apiece.

Diet Coke/Pepsi/Whatever they're selling is my vice.

I consume far too much of the stuff. I've tried to quit or at least cut back several times only to find it free in a pressbox and fall off the wagon.

And such a terrible fall it is. ::)

Well, looks like the New Yorker story isn't online. If you want to look, the writer is Burkhard Bilger, and the story is titled 'The Search for Sweet'...

Definitely changed my opinion on which is the greater evil, sugar or chemicals....

It isn't that they aren't organic. Most soy products make a big deal on the labeling that they are non-GMO, actually i.e. not genetically altered soybeans. But you should at least be suspicious about all of the health claims about soy being the perfect food. It is mostly being propogated by a well-organized industry that is making a ton of money. Soybeans are incredibly cheap to grow and they are versatile. You can heat process it and remold it to soak up almost any flavor and take on any texture. But the processing may actually negate any healthy aspects of the soybeans. And too much soy in your diet also probably contributes to infertility in men and may promote breast cancer in women, as well as other negative health effects, like playing tricks on your thyroid.

Do a simple google search and you can find dozens of articles. It's kind of fascinating. About half of what you find will make you believe it is the healthiest food on the planet. The other half will make you want to avoid it at all costs.

Here is one article that I just found that is kind of interesting, summing up some of what I am talking about: http://www.breadandmoney.com/docs/soy.html

If you have a discipline and knowledge to have a healthy vegan or vegetarian lifestyle, more power to you.

I just like meat too much to give it up.

I've cut out sugar since becoming a Type 2 diabetic. Gave up pop all together and don't miss it - a big ol' Perrier with some lime squeezed in works for me - but I couldn't give up coffee and I can't drink coffee without some sweetner in it. I figure I'll take the health risks associated rather than give up one of my remaining pleasures.

I once read that the only food that isn't bad for you in any way is mustard. ;D
