IJAG, I run and row not only to burn off calories, but because it's good for my heart. It keeps the heart muscles from stiffening as you get older, prevents heart disease, etc. So I exercise 6, sometimes 7 days a week, not because I am trying to get a total number of minutes in for the week, but because it's good to make your heart work a little each day.

Another big component for me is the endorphin high. I am a naturally anxious person--to an unhealthy extreme--and sometimes I can't turn my mind off when I really need to. It's like the stuff in my head is rapid firing out of control, and sometimes when that happens I spiral in bad ways. Hard exercise, in which I challenge myself and work up a good sweat, is the only thing I have found in life that takes so much concentration that my mind naturally stays focussed. I just blast upbeat music in my ears and get my heart rate up for a sustained period of time, and I find inner peace. When I am done with a workout, and the endorphins have kicked in, the sense of calm I have for anywhere from 1 to 3 hours is in such stark contrast to the way I normally am, that I need to give myself that gift as many days of the week as I possibly can.

You can go work out, shower, change and get to work in an hour?

I had my first appointment with my trainer today. An hour of stretching and working my arms and legs, then 45 minutes of cardio on my own. Left my house at 10:30, got home at 1:30. I'm going to shower, nap, then go to work at 4. Couldn't do it much later than noon and get it all done. Color me impressed, wicked.

I work out for a half-hour. Not like it's a super wonderful workout, but it's better than nothing. And the gym isn't even five minutes from the office.

My workouts are about an hour ... went five times this week and feel great.

I usually get more like 40 to 45 minutes in, but on some days I'm pressed for time.

IJAG, I know in the past that when I've spent 90 minutes or more working out, I got burned out quickly. Don't overdo it.

I also think we should post our healthy meals as much as possible to keep those trying to eat right motivation to keep it up.

Breakfast: handful of blueberries, banana, grapefruit, 2 clementines, apple, handful of walnuts. Went to work and bought a bagel with cream cheese and lox.

Didn't have lunch per se since I was covering Nordic skiing for 3 hours. Just got home and made dinner: 4 celery sticks, handful of baby carrots, handful of walnuts and chicken breast pan-cooked in lemon juice/olive oil/spices.

I'll try not to, but I might eat a candy bar at the hoops game in 2 hours. For the most part, though, keeping it healthy. You should, too.

I'll be your long-distance chef: just try to eat some of the same things I do. It's a start.

Transforming my diet is one of the hardest things I'll do. I'd love some greasy crap (Ultimate Cheeseburger, Tommy's burger, 14 hard taco supremes from Taco Bell, instant mashed potatoes to feed a small army), but it would be counter-productive to the gym work.

Well, wicked, I don't really have an option. My trainer sessions are an hour each, and if (as I've been told by people on this site) it's best to do weights before cardio because then you're burning fat in the cardio, then I have to do cardio afterward.

On days without the weights, cardio only, I'll only do 30-60 minutes.

Five days this week. Calories-burned count by my heart-rate monitor: 1,061, 960, 510, 850, 502 = 3,883. The 500s are leg days when they're blasted, so no cardio on those days. I usually spend at least two hours on the gym floor, up to as much as 2 1/2.
My diet holds me back from getting my body-fat content to a better level. But I'm getting there.
