Brekky (as the Aussies would say): same as the last 3 days — lots of fruit, handful of walnuts, coffee.

Keep up the good eating habits, SportsJournalists.commers from transformational betterment!

    I sucked hard yesterday.

After working 10 straight desk shifts, My body shut down. I woke up around 1 p.m., ate a bowl of cereal and a tangerine. Had lunch around 4 (unhealthy, but only 6 points) and then went to bed at 8 and slept until 11:30 p.m. Got up, ate a 'nutrition' bar and did 45 minutes of cardio. Went to bed without eating anything else. Only drank about 20 ounces of water. Slept from 3:30 a.m. until 4:15 p.m. Just ate a bowl of cereal. Not hungry.

I cannot believe a human being, especially one I know and like, can survive a schedule like that. How do you stay alive? Seriously. It's amazing.

How so? I have always lived on that schedule on days off, except my normal eating habits included things like Long John's and 200 ounces of soda.

Don't kick yourself, IJAG. At least you didn't gorge on fast food. Good job.

As for my meals after brekky ... for lunch I had a turkey and swiss bagel sandwich with onion and spicy mustard and a small cup of mac and cheese, and coffee.

For dinner I just finished the remnants of the chicken breast I cooked Thursday, celery sticks and baby carrots dipped in creamy poppy seed dressing (not too much) and 2 clementines, and a handful of walnuts.

I wasn't dissing you personally, IJAG. Just saying ... that's a schedule that lends itself to fatigue and restlessness. I don't see how you do it.

Oh, I'm always fatigued and restless. That's a trademark.

IJAG and significant others no longer work in the Monday to Friday 9-5 world. Those who work shifts have similar disaster lives and have difficulty transitioning to days off.

Yeah, DocTalk, I have a very tough time knowing what to do on a "day off." Foreign concept. I'm always in work mode.

My problem is that my job involves desk shifts and beat work. So on weeks I'm on the road, I'm up by 5 a.m. and going to bed at midnight. But I'm used to not falling asleep until 3 or 4 a.m., so I don't sleep well.

When I'm at home, working desk, I'm working 4 p.m.-midnight. So my body just sometimes hits jags where it expects a change or something, and can't keep up if I'm doing more of one than the other.

Crappiest is going from desk to road.

Well, since this thread has taken off again, with everyone reporting on stuff they did... I am trying to cut back on that Diet Arizona Green Tea I wrote about with the Splenda in it. I still drink two cups of black coffee first thing in the morning before I exercise. Then after I exercise, I am now drinking regular brewed organic green tea. We'll see how this goes.

I did pretty well this morning. Up at 5 a.m., out the door before 6 a.m. and I did a rare outdoor run, in the drizzle and fog. I went a little more than 5 miles, and kept a very consistent pace. It worked out to around 7 minutes a mile. What was nice was that I hit a zone, in which all I was concentrating on was the music in my ears and my movements, which were rythymic. I don't know if anyone else knows the feeling, but when I'm like that, everything about each stride and each movement of my arms seems so consistent from one step to the next that it lulls me along and makes me feel like I'm not wasting any energy. When I'm running like that, my mind gets incredibly calm and I might as well be somewhere else.

Of course the actual place I did end up was a bit different from places I have run before. I ran through three nice neighborhoods, then parallel to a housing project and into a neighborhood that I am sure is safe, but probably doesn't get too many white people jogging through it. It was so early, though, that the only people out were people catching buses for work. After I had gone past the five mile mark that I'd mapped out, I hopped on the subway and came home. I'll need to do that run again. It was fun and pretty traffic free.

I thought Idaho actually lived in Idaho (or maybe Utah). I didn't think he went anywhere near Illinois.
