If you want to read a really well-done Manson book, try this one. Jeff Guinn is a former Fort Worth Star-Telegram reporter, and all his books -- on Bonnie and Clyde, Jonestown, Shootout at the OK Corral -- are all very well-reported and researched. (FWIW, I'm not Jeff Guinn, just a fan of his work.)

  2. When the FBI profilers first stated interviewing Charlie in jail he would sit on top of the backs of the chairs.

I was 14 in 1969 and I remember it well. I think the thing is that there have been so many of these kinds of slaughters in the ensuing 48 years that we've kind of become numb to it, but back then it scared the hell out of everyone from coast to coast. Then to learn it was this scrawny little jailbird with Hitler eyes that manipulated all these kids into committing these ghastly crimes just added to the public's fascination with the case. Also, these were rich Hollywood types who were the victims one night and an average upper-class couple the second, and the feeling was that if it could happen to them, it could happen to anybody anywhere.

Pitt was good as a serial killer in 'Kalifornia.' I think he'd be good as Manson.
I don't like Bale as a good fit, nor do I like Cruise, whose best quality for the role would be his diminutive size.
    ... and because he's in a cult.

Yeah Vega is less of a serial killer. Could be argued that he didn't kill anyone who didn't deserve it or was involved in that lifestyle. I don't think the comparison resonates.

My issue is with glorifying these real life losers.

  9. How about the dude who plays Gollum? Andy Serkis?

I liked NBK even if any empathy for the protagonist left when Micky kidnapped the girl.

You're right - I'm guessing the fascination wasn't so much with Manson, but how so many young people from "good families" could become so twisted. It couldn't be the kids - it had to be Manson.

Brad Renfro would be great as Manson. He's so good in everything else.
