I would rather talk about why the Times still doesn't have a female sports columnist.

That's true enough. So why pick on this one?

You guys are like the Swift Boaters. You think if you repeat something enough, people will believe you. And like the Swift Boats crap, none of the people who were actually up close are among the detractors.

Again, I've suggested that anyone who can point to even one specific time when actual news was missed so a feature could run should enlighten us with links to that coverage. The fact that none of the detractors have been able to do so should tell everyone that there's nothing to support their claim.

This is expecially troubling coming from people who claim to be journalists because deep down you know that what you've done here is well below the standards you'd be held to in your work. Newspapers run opinion and analysis all the time, but it won't pass muster without some specifics and you certainly know that.

It's all becoming clear to me now. The Times was embarrised by the fact that some of their readers were Jet fans and hatched a plan to drive them to the Daily News.

Perhaps Mr. Jolly's been too busy helping Mr. Newman craft his series of inspirational wall posters and executive desk sets to conduct any interviews.

the issue being addressed here is not only about whether the princess "missed stories" -- although she did on occasion whiff on the beat minutiae she found beneath her -- but also her whining about mistreatment by fellow jets beat writers.

does anyone give a darn? no, that's why it's an "insider's" topic on a sports journalists board. just a discussion. so sorry it offends the blind faithful.

aside to my pal 21: i have to assume the times is furiously working on replacing selena roberts with a female columnist. maybe karen gets the gig. if she doesn't, i'm sure she'll accept that with grace and dignity and everlasting charm. ::) ::) ::)

The one truism that all agree on is that Karen's coverage was different from the traditional Pro football beat coverage.

Whether it was good or not is something we will never agree on.

Either be a professional and provide links or shut up. Direct challenge.

On a more pleasant note I hear that Newman is looking for a new gig. Perhaps his pal Tom could put him on the Jet beat.

Boom, as a reader, I grant you every right to your crotchets and peeves about how anything we cover gets covered. I don't read much about football, nor have I read much of Ms. Crouse's work. But as you say, it's utterly subjective, and we should respect one another's various opinions.

I'm curious about the burr under Shockey's saddle, however, since his take on all this has become increasingly personal.

jmac shouldn't it be spelled "crousets"

I would think those might be really short Crouse stories. Or would that be Crousettes? In either case, it sounds a little like something you'd find on the side of your plate in a French restaurant. Peeve en crouset, s'il vous plait?
