I probably should have emphasized Miami's coach too - Butch Davis is a hell of a recruiter and talent developer. Coker just reaped the rewards of Davis' recruiting. So if you want to make the argument that Notre Dame needs to hire Butch Davis to develop its talent better, that is an argument that makes sense. But saying that joining the Big East is somehow a solution to any of Notre Dame's football problems makes no sense.

If I'm NBC, I'm just giddy over those future schedules. Nothing excites the masses like TV games with Nevada, South Florida and UConn.

And no future games with BC past 2011, but tons of future games with Pitt? They'll be sorry when the find out that Jesus is a Jesuit.

The BCS will tweak its special ND inclusion rules to make it even harder to qualify after it goes 10-2 against a bunch of stiffs and takes a spot away from a potential SEC, Big 12 or pac-10 entrant that won't get blown out by 28 points, the average margin of defeat in ND's last three BCS mismatches.

And are Notre Dame's "football problems" really anythign to worry about? The game has never been more popular than in the past decade, a time of relative ND unimportance on the national scene.

Let us not forget that match against the west coast power known as San Diego State...

  5. That's all you've got? Really? Really? A shot at the Rivals rankings?

I was just using them to dispute the people who claimed that Notre Dame players were automatically overrated by the recruiting services. I think that list shows otherwise.

I'm sorry, but if you're consistently landing players also being recruited by Florida, USC, Michigan, Miami ... and you WERE consistently landing players being recruited by Kent State, Navy, Cincinnati and Utah ... then something should have changed about the quality of your players.

I'm not quite sure what point we're arguing here.

I'm saying that Weis should be performing better with the players he has - and that those players appear to be of a higher quality than the ones in the classes immediately before he came in.

But you're saying what? His players aren't any good? That they are overrated just because they went to Notre Dame? Then why is Urban Meyer chasing them, too? And Pete Carroll? And Lloyd Carr?

    Ever been to Jeannette, Pa.?

How backwards that place is, they would consider Jed Clampett arrogant.

I believe that's because BC left the Big East. Its own decision, but one that took it off the list for ND's promised three games a year with Big East teams (which explains UConn and South Florida. The Nevada game is a long story.)
And that's too bad for BC, because they probably sell more season ticket packages off that Notre Dame game than they do for their entire ACC schedule put together. But if they want to be the northeastern Catholic school in a conference of southern state schools, that's their business.

Will BC they miss playing ND in football? No doubt, one day a year. Plus it's been an easy win for them the past six years or so.

But the other 364 (or 365) days a year they're far, far better off being in an athletic conference that is vastly superior to the Big East in every way, shape or form, especially when it comes time to cash the checks.

And I think ND fans would rather pay $50 a ticket (or whatever) to watch BC than to watch South Florida or UConn.

Aren't Notre Dame fans already paying $50 or whatever to watch South Florida or UConn 6 or 7 times a year, which is what ND football is today without its tradition.

If you know anything about recruiting, you know how many players will say they're being recruited by the major schools when all they got is a letter or two.
When I look at Florida's roster, I don't think Urban Meyer loses a lot of sleep over 1 or 2 guys who might have chosen ND over him. Eric Rudolph and Jimmy Claussen, everybody wanted. But you're not building a team around 1-2 such players, or 5-6, or even 18-20. You need 30-40.
The overrating of ND recruits is one of college football's most closely held traditions.
Doing it your way, ND hasn't been a factor in this sport for nearly 20 years.
Doing it my way might give them a future.

Maybe. That's a debate for another thread. My point really was that the end of the ND-BC series isn't Notre Dame's doing. And, frankly, win or lose it's not something most Notre Dame fans will miss much. BC, on the other hand? It's probably their biggest rivalry.

  12. Again, why were they then underrating Notre Dame's recruits during Ty Willingham's era? Why weren't David Bruton and Justin Brown and Kyle McCarthy telling Rivals about the "letter or two" that they've gotten?

And it's Kyle Rudolph and Jimmy Clausen.
