Oates' presence in Arlington was the best thing ever to happen to a franchise that hasn't had many good things occur. RIP, indeed.

Poll needs to be multiple choice.

It is, as slappy pointed out, a distinguished list. I'm guessing Martin will win this poll, but Bobby V has many detractors and there are a few dark-horse douches who might surprise and finish first.

I don't have anything but anecdotal evidence. I was in high school in Arlington at the time. My dad had ties to the club. I remember hearing gratuitous Rader-bashing from the adults. Most of it was about his managing, but some of it was personal, too. Whether the guy was a douche, I have no idea. People associated him, fairly or unfairly, with the infamous Sundberg-for-Yost trade so he didn't exactly get off on the right foot.

Johnny had his quirks and could be pretty thin-skinned at times, but he was a good person and is missed greatly.

I've talked with a few players who played for Johnny Oates and I never heard anything but the best words that could be spoken of a man said about him. Oates may not have been the best manager ever, but his players loved him like a dad.

On the other hand, I've also spoken with someone who played or coached under Valentine when he was in Texas. Didn't hear anything nice said about him then. In fact, the worst that I ever saw said about Valentine when he was with the Mets wasn't comparable to what was said about him by someone else. Yowza!

Former Times Herald Rangers beat writer Phil Rogers included an account of the Rader era in his book "The Impossible Takes a Little Longer." I haven't read it since it came out in the early 90s, so I've no immediate recollection of what Rogers had to say about Rader. I have it at home somewhere in a stack of old books.

My favorite Rangers book is "Seasons in Hell" by Mike Shropshire. Covers 1972-75: Ted, Whitey, Billy. Hilarious stuff.
