Shiner used to taste better than it does now. And it used to be cheaper than Bud/Miller/Coors shit, not more expensive.

Really? I'm new to the Shiner phenomenon, so I didn't know it changed. And yes, bars charge import prices for it. Still, I'd rather pay an extra .50 cents for a good beer you can taste.

It has a slightly sharper taste than it once did- not as creamy and mellow. Probably has something to do with it being produced in great quantities, as opposed to when it was once a Central/Southeast Texas regional beer. It's still good. The kolsch version is a very nice light ale for the hellish Texas summers.

I've never tried that. Is it anything like the blonde, which I absolutely despised?

It's better than the blonde. The blonde is a typical Texas-style pilsener- a little watery. Not that much better than Lone Star or Pearl. The kolsch has more flavor- very hoppy. It's actually an ale, not a lager.

Spoetzl brewery in Shiner is a must. As is Los Barrios on Blanco Road in SA. Best Mexican food I've ever had. Not as familiar with that part of the state but good Tex-Mex and Shiner are the ONLY things I miss about my five-and-a-half years there.

Well, OK... Latina women, too. Carry on.

As someone who lived in Texas for 12 years but never made it to Dallas, San Antonio or Houston, I would have to say the best part about Texas is the food! You have to eat two things while you're there:

*Mexican food (it's REAL Mexican food and so tasty. Be prepared, it will probably be quite spicy. They don't exactly skimp on the jalepenos down there.)
*Barbecue. This makes me hungry just thinking about it. I'm serious, you have not eaten barbecue until you've eaten it in Texas.

Also, whoever said to pick up a Texas travel guide had good advice. Those things have everything in them.

Also, I've heard from several of my family members (okay, every member of my family has been there but me, which, by the way, so unfair) that the Riverwalk is amazing.

Also, Texas in July will be miserable as far as the weather goes. Pray that the A/C in your car makes it the entire trip or you may die a very painful death.

Jeez, Wenders. San Antonio and Dallas are about in the middle of the state. Just zip on over and check 'em out, dammit!

Oh yeah, Cooper's Pit BBQ in Llano, north and west of SA in Hill Country, is the best I've ever had.

The problem was, I lived in Amarillo so the rest of Texas was at least a day's drive away.

You'd think you'd want to see civilization every once in a while.

Never been to Texas (one day, I'll get there), but I'll vouch for Texas Rebel Radio out of Fredericksburg as one of the great radio stations on the planet.
