While passing through Austin you need to detour off I-35, swing by UTexas' football stadium and bow down and pay homage to the statues of Darrell Royal and Joe Jamail. The latter is a lawyer and huge donor. Oh yes, they have a statue of a donor in their football stadium. ::)

Cowshitistan's poo-scented steppes are a compelling alternative to civilization.

When going from Dallas to SA, don't forget to stop at West for kolaches and Pivo.

That's just north of Waco, the "kolache gas station" in West.

Any news about the BBQ turkey place in Abbott? I was told that it was going to re-open.

The Czech Stop in West on the NB side of I-35.

The Turkey Shop in Abbott has open for awhile now.

Also, Abbott is the birthplace of Willie Nelson.

The new and improved Carl's Corner truck stop just north of Hillsboro on 35E is close to reopening as well. Alas, they have closed the strip joint that was a part of the old truck stop.

The Czech Stop is the best. place. ever. Don't be fooled by the gas stations on the south side of 35. It's worth the trip under the freeway/fighting for parking at the real Czech Stop.

Schlitterbahn is also fun. The park is spring-fed, for the most part, so the water is cold. I didn't think I could be freezing cold on a 101 day in Central Texas, but I was wrong. There are actually three parks in one. It's a bit pricey ($37 admission for an adult) but very enjoyable for the cost.

There is great hole-in-the-wall Mexican food everywhere. Don't be afraid to ask locals or just look for tiny places with crowded parking lots.

Budget at least an hour for getting through downtown Austin, possibly more depending on the time of day. I-35 is the only major north-south road through a town that has long outgrown its infrastructure. There is also some legendary barbeque in this area.

Dallas World Aquarium in downtown Dallas is near(ish) the Sixth Floor Museum and a good stop for a family. Sixth Floor is nice if you like history. I was a bit bored by it. Dallas and Fort Worth are so spread out away from 35, it's hard to know where to direct you there. If you're staying overnight you can get into Irving, Arlington, Grapevine and all the mid-cities stuff.

The Mexican food will run through you quickly though. I have lit up more bathrooms at the restaurants down here than I ever did eating Mexican up north.

Incredibly moving experience. One of the best museums in the country.

At least it's better than when I was 12-on...my parents decided to move me to bum-fuck-nowhere Kansas. I was BEGGING for West Texas again.

You should try Shiner Black, my old boss loves it. I found it to be quite hideous, though it can get you messed up in a hurry.

Also, the face that Shiner is considered an import at bars in Texas always made me want to kill multiple people.

Darn right. I always thought in Texas, Shiner, Lone Star, et al. should be considered domestics and Budweiser and Coors foreign.
