So you think drunk driving should be legal?

    Just clarifying.

Yes, but unlike meatheads like OOP, you at least understand and verbalized the fact that true libertarians would oppose a lot of inane laws, silly regulations and goofy ass taxes that meatheads like OOP think we all need from the government to save us from ourselves....

And if he thinks there is any libertarian out there who would go for a government-mandated app in their phone then he is dumber than we all know he is.

OK, I'll give you that. The statement was overbroad.

OK, since everybody is now an expert on what Libertarians would think about texting while driving laws and of course most people are too dumb to understand that being against laws against something doesn't mean you support it, it just means you don't want more laws, let's go to the films......

    Now please, stop embarrassing yourselves.

I'm not for lunatics shooting up schools.
I'm not for wackos robbing people with guns.
I'm not for losers shooting up malls.
I'm not for wannabe thugs driveby shooting unless they do us a favor and shoot at each other

I'm also not for gun laws, gun registration, background checks and all the other inane regulations the liberty-haters among us want to force feed down our throats.

Like any philosophy - taking Libertarianism to extremes would cause chaos.

    I get that.

There needs to be SOME laws governing roadways, SOME regulations and ordinances of industries and products etc, and SOME taxes.

But we're about 5000000000 country miles BEYOND "SOME" in this country these days and that's the fucking problem...

Well, it is just one of many examples I could pull of Libertarians fighting texting/cell phone laws.

It doesn't mean they support texting while driving and they make it pretty clear they don't think you should do it.

But it also doesn't mean we need laws to stop it

Ben Franklin can take "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" and shove it up his freedom-hating ass. He was always a fascist anyway.

I can only speak my my little part of flyover country, but judges in my state have a ton of discretion in sentencing. Very few crimes have a mandatory sentence written into the state's criminal code. So, here, reckless driving doesn't mean shit as a crime. A small fine and no suspension of license. It's very ineffective.

You are right in that we can't keep throwing people in prison, but some of the punishments that can be enforced (license suspension, hefty fines, interlock devices) just aren't being enforced. I think I mentioned a while ago, but I wrote about a man with 10 DUI convictions and how no judge would enforce the state's mandatory sentence of 10 years in prison upon a fifth conviction. He always got the one-year state rehab clinic, then he would be arrested again right after getting out. Absolutely crazy, but that's an extreme case that's always an interesting story.

I hope it's better in other states. Hell, we had a newly appointed magistrate judge resign after less than a year on the job because she was busted for DUI. She lawyered up and worked the system as good as anyone else who can afford representation beyond the public defender. She had to abstain from presiding over all DUI cases and eventually resigned under pressure. She still beat the charge. A year later, pulled over and busted for open container. If a judge won't abide by the law, how can we expect others to do the same?

Anyway, that's just how fucked up Idaho can be at times. Sorry for rambling, friend, it was one of a few major topics I reported on while I was a reporter in a past life.
