Good advice. In that instance, though, I didn't want the other eye to show.

You don't have to light the whole eye, but without catchlights, people look dead.

Trust me on this one. Just this one. None of the others. You can ignore those. :p

Well, UT, you know I value your opinions. That first shot isn't going in the paper. Just sat next to her while her little sister played a soccer game. But if I did use the photo, I wouldn't change a thing about it. I want people to focus on that one eye. I like the shroud of mystery with a shadow over her right eye.

I thought the lighting was a bit harsh in that first photo, but I did like the composition. If you had the same soft light that you got in the second photo, with only the left side lit, I think it would have been really nice.

Good stuff, though. This is a great thread. I'm going to have to forward the link to my photogs. I think any shooter can probably glean something from it, whether it's finding new angles, or just some of the technical stuff, there's a lot of value in this one.

Thanks, bigpern. The lightning was natural sunlight around 7:30 p.m., so it was getting darker by the minute. I didn't do much to the settings, just sort of zoomed in on her face and shot it. I agree with your thought about having the soft light of the 2nd shot with the 1st shot. I was really just flirting with her through the camera lens. She gave me her card, but she lives in Boston. Two hours is too far to be starting some kind of dating thing.

From Saturday night, using automatic settings to get this father and son before son's at-bat in the title game. It came out way to dark, but then I noticed a possibility for a cool silouette, so I darkened the levels pretty good in Photoshop. I've covered this boy for 4 years now, going back to his 5th grade year in Little League. He's one of the kids I'll miss when I leave sports. He needs to toughen up a bit, but athletic-wise, he's going to be a good one.

Cool shot ... I love me some baseball silhouette shots. Reminds me of a shot one of my photogs took years back (maybe I'll dig it up if I find time) of a pitcher standing on the mound adjusting his cap, silhouetted against a fire-orange sky. It won a couple of awards and is one of my favorite pictures I've ever run in my section.

Should have been shot from a lower angle to put the father's finger against the sky. The utility pole splits the frame separating the father and son. If you were after a silhouette at the start, not salvaging an accident, adjusting your position slightly would have tied it together better.

I'd be careful about relying on PhotoShop effects or adjustmentw to add impact.

Totally agree. I turned and saw them talking and tried to click ASAP before the kid walked to the plate. Not the ideal silhouette. This was, indeed, just a salvage job.

I got 1st place in N.H. for this one in 2004.

I feel like I've seen this before... in some guy's office...

  12. I'm not sure if that's an inside joke, but it does look like one of those posters that would say, "TEAM: Together Everyone Achieves More" at the bottom.
