It's the early 80s, so Martha's fineness is 10-plus years out of date.

She's important to the bigger story arc. As mentioned here, Checkov's gun has to go off.

She's important to the theme, too. She part of the cost of the game. She's a willing dupe, and her subconscious willingness is much better expressed than it was in Keri Russell's sailor boyfriend.

 

I just started watching last night's episode, but 20 minutes in, this is all you need to know.

I'm a little disappointed, because usually this show gives me a new fetish every week, and I already had a "naked women" fetish.
