Car and Driver was amazing. My Dad subscribed. The best group of columnists I have seen assembled inside one periodical. And at times during that era the New Yorker was probably better but not consistently.

But I have an aunt who was a copy editor for TV Guide. We were talking about magazines and she said she had an SI subscription. My aunt does not know how many players there are in a football game. She said because the use of the English language was so masterful at SI she could enjoy it just for that.

Car and Driver is still pretty good. Without question, IMO, the top automotive publication. (For websites, try Edmunds.com).

This is me (and lots of other people) at work for the past 12 years:

But yeah, we're out of touch with the reality of the business.

Fortunately, I'm close enough to retirement (25 months) that I can afford to not really give a shit one way or another. Just passing the ball around running my four-corners offense in a no-shot-clock world.

I think the rise of fantasy sports, especially in the DraftKings/FanDuel era, has made the most ardent fans turn to the beat writers for analysis. They care less about opinions and more about the inner-workings of the team so they can try to win money.

I read car and Driver faithfully for the mid late 80s, right when I was a teen. Those writers seemed like the absolute coolest guys on earth.

Hey, there are worse things to do than Dean Smith your way to the finish line.

This. Very much so. The amount of injury questions I get during a season has shifted drastically. Being familiar with fantasy will be vital for covering pro sports.

Good on you. Run a few belly plays out of disguised formations and keep working that clock. Just be protecting the football.

In the mid-'80s, GQ had a very good lineup of columnists: Mordecai Richler, Wilfrid Sheed, Ron Powers and Michael K. Evans, among others.
