I have to slightly disagree about the Diet Coke, as long as you have will power. I understand the argument that it makes you long for sweets, but if Shotglass drinks regular pop, it might be better to transition to diet at first instead of going cold turkey. At least diet doesn't have any calories.

Regular soda was never a factor. I'm a Diet Coke junkie, have been for 35 years.

Dropping the Diet Coke is going to be one of the harder things to do. But I am going to try it. I've replaced it all with the flavored water.

Shot--That could not have been easy to write, especially around these parts. Big first step.

You say you've tried this before and can't stay with it. Here's why: You will never make it eating that way. Never. All the 'willpower' in the world won't survive hunger, habits, and general lack of of a really good plan. Strongly suggest you look into Weight Watchers or similar, which can teach you how to eat for the rest of your life, not just for the time you're dropping weight. People who are chronically overweight are usually that way because of their eating habits. If you eat the right food at the right time, you can pretty much eat whatever you want. Don't think about eating skimpy, think about eating cleaner.

That granola/cereal for breakfast will leave you hungry too soon--all carbs. Get some protein in there. Eat your biggest meal early in the day, not at the end. We all do that backwards, a light breakfast and big dinner. Wrong way. Do you put gas in the car before you take the trip or just before you arrive at the destination? Exactly.

A 300 lb man cannot live on a couple Lean Cuisines. I weigh 118 pounds, I can't live on Lean Cuisines. You have to eat so you feel satisfied, not deprived. Eat something every 3 hours or so, don't allow yourself to get hungry, it will cause you to binge.

For starters, pick a couple things--just a couple--you can fix right away. Do you eat a lot of bread? Sandwiches? Get rid of the bread. Or get rid of one slice. Or cut out pasta. Or cookies. Or pizza. Or alcohol. One or two items that can literally cut a couple thousand calories out of your week. If you cut everything at once, you won't last.

You can't go wrong increasing protein (chicken breasts, turkey, grilled fish) and decreasing the white garbage (bread, pasta, candy).

Get rid of the diet soda.

Your eating trumps your exercise, you can't outrun a bad diet. Start exercising slowly, don't try to kill it the first week.

Tons of good info out there on small things you can do to change your health and eating habits. Good luck, and let us know how it goes!

I'm not trying to be argumentative, but why is everyone so down on the diet pop? Because it gives you a "sweet tooth"?

  5. Does anyone have any suggestions for pull up bar to fit moulding in older homes?
I have seven-inch door casing in the house and thick plaster walls. I can NOT find a pull up bar assembly to fit.
    Any ideas?

I've been doing Tim Ferris' 4-hour body for the last four weeks and it's awesome. I think it's a lot more realistic than other diets, especially for bigger guys. It's not as extreme as Atkins and you don't get the cravings that are associated with Atkins and the best part is you get a cheat day once a week where you can eat anything you want, which is pretty awesome because if you're craving something during the week, it's a lot easier to say, "Well, I'll wait until Sunday." than never being able to eat that again...

Not to be argumentative, but what about it?

That gives me a lot to think about. Thanks, 21.

It's supposed to be pretty bad for you.

I'm trying to go with Sobe Lifewater. The Fuji Apple Pear zero calorie one is just awesome and Snapple's Diet Half and Half (Arnold Palmer) is pretty great too...

My wife always says that, too. I mean, she worries more about my caffeine free Diet Coke than she does about just about anything else I put in my mouth. So one night we looked it up on the American Cancer Web site and other places. Apparently no proof whatsoever that there's anything to worry about whatsoever. It's pretty much innocuous.

Yeah, my wife freaks out about it too... It's supposed to hinder weight loss. I don't know if that's true or not.
