On Monday I had a body fat test done (calipers). It's still way too high, but in the last five weeks I've lost 11 pounds of fat and gained 5 pounds of muscle.

Once you're at the weight you want to be at, how do you alter the routine that got you there?

After gaining back pretty much all I lost in Peace Corps and Jakarta, I've been trying to get back down to where I was overseas. The daily routine is merely a calorie-burning one: 70 minutes on an elliptical followed by a short burst of weight-lifting and 35 minutes on a bike. I've been doing well since moving to China and have kept up with the five-pounds-a-month target that I set at the start of the year.

Once I get there (inchallah!), what do I change? Or do I keep doing the same thing? I am so sick of the elliptical.

I'm now down 21 pounds. When I visited the doctor last week, my blood pressure was the lowest it's ever been when I've seen him. Usually it's borderline high, like 140 over 90 (and when I'd get it taken anywhere else it was lower). Last week it was 120 over 74. My triglycerides dropped from 190 in October to 90. My HDL is still too low at 24. My total cholesterol is 153 but that was never a problem.

Now 27 pounds, but lost 4 pounds of muscle while dealing with an ear infection and an upper respiratory infection.

I've lost 40 pounds in three months with an insane plan.

Every time I go the grocery or a restaurant, I convince myself if I pick up or order unhealthy food, everyone else in the place is secretly judging me. I've essentially made complete strangers at Kroger my disapproving accountability partners.

It's crazy. It's neurotic. It works.

Although in some ways, that's actually how people who manage their weight well are already thinking.

I've been fluctuating between 339 and 242 for most of the last six weeks. I'm getting stronger, however, and people still say I look like I'm losing weight.
