Funny thing about the Pondscum book.....buddy of Wojo's once told me it's been out of print for about a decade, maybe more....and never sold that well in the first place. So how'd it get to be so legendary? (And I agree with those who say it's the definitive book on the biz, no disrespect to Mr Walsh's book, which I have not read....)

No, but I wasn't the one comparing the two. I have enough trouble returning the books I have out to the library to worry about actually WRITING any. Someday, though ... someday.

My parents gave me the book as part of a 19th birthday present last week. Looks good.

If only I had more time for recreational reading. As soon as I finish Game of Shadows, I'm looking forward to reading this.

I've read Pond Scum & Vultures, and I really liked it because it's a fun read, but it's nothing like this book.

PS&V is all anecdotes and I don't want to say that it's out-dated, but most of the travel section is on being behind the Iron Curtain (yes, before the Cold War ended), there are numerous references to people working at The National, and a there's chapter on how women were finally being allowed into locker rooms.

that's a far more valid point to make than, say, someone who'd say something like "If you refer them to this book over say, "Pond Scum and Vultures" you're doing all of them a HUGE disservice" when they most assuredly haven't read walsh's book...to be expected, however.

I picked up the book about 2 weeks ago...it's a great read, everything I had expected...

any questions that any newcomer would have are answered in the book...I love it, and once I'm done, I'm sure I'll carry it around in my bag and such as inspiration...

    Congrats, Chris...

Think an updated, more wide-ranging version of "Pond Scum and Vultures" might sell?

Pond Scum and Vultures didn't sell.

Yeah, I know it didn't do so great - but everyone the sports journalism community seems to really like it. So my question is do people think that something with a little more range might do better now?

The answer's probably no - but I thought it might be interesting to throw out there ...
