I got the book as soon as Chris told me it was out. I loved it and still read it now 6 or so months later. I will be more then happy to pick up his new book without question.

I think it shows what the people giving the award don't know. :)

  3. Well, I didn't exactly write it with the purpose of making a lot of money (although money's nice - don't get me wrong), so the discounted price doesn't bother me too much. It's been out for a year now, that's what happens.

Having said that, it might make a great father's day gift, don't you think? ;D

To answer Sportsnut's question, the next book is due out in the fall (probably October): "Who's #1? 100-Plus Years of Controversial Champions in College Football." I'm waiting on the proofs and eager to see how many of the 180-plus photos made the cut.

So is the 1929 Boys' Life National Championship race discussed?

I'm still waiting for you to get the copy of your last book out of the car

  6. It's still in my car, I was serious about that, and it's the first book. The list of people I had to say thanks to for the SEC book, and thus get them a copy, was long and I've pretty much been out since it was released last fall.

FYI, for those who have no idea what I'm talking about (which is probably most everyone), when you write a book you get 20 copies, or whatever your contract says, for yourself. Trust me, they go very quickly.

This thread inspired me to go pick up "No Time Outs". . . once I got my hands on it, I couldn't put it down. For a rookie like me, it was cool to read about how somebody else has climbed the ladder in this business.

Thanks, Chris. I've really enjoyed reading over the last week. I've recommended it to several of my journalism buddies - I hope they'll pick it up, as I think it really is a great book for people who want to be sportswriters.

  10. ICB, thanks for the very kind note. I do appreciate it.

A quick update on "Who's #1? 100-Plus Years of Controversial Champions in College Football." My publisher has put it into rush mode so it can be out for the start of football season. I should be getting the final proofs in a week or so, along with the cover.

Any leaks as to what the cover will look like, Chris? You've got a tough act to follow after the "No Time Outs" cover!

  12. Not yet because they haven't leaked anything to me, only that it has their full attention (or something like that).

However, I can give some insight on a possibility. I was able to accumulate something like 185 photos for the book, although many were not high-res (which obviously didn't exist when most of them were taken). This caused concern in terms of quality. My first idea was to make those not quite up to grade smaller. My second idea was to fade them and use in the background of the cover.

My best guess is that they will do neither, so I too am anxious to see the cover. Hopefully it'll happen in the next couple of weeks.
