Keep in mind she'd already skipped one exam. I don't recall her exact reason, but it wasn't an emergency of any sort. She skipped because she knew she had a freebie and didn't anticipate getting this opportunity.

How do you think it would have been perceived had I let the Dallas Cowboys cheerleader have an extra skip?

I think you may have run in to some perception problems if other students found out. I also think that given what you have told us about your no nonsense style that most students would have understood why the exception was given and ultimately not had a problem with it (if they even found out).

During my time on campus I knew of several students who got exams moved, rescheduled, etc for a variety of reasons. One of my closest friend's dad was the assistant Dean of Arts and we talked about over beers in his back yard.

I get why you had the rule and can understand the slippery slope arguement. I just think that there was an opportunity to teach the bigger lesson and make the accomodation whether it was a cheerleader raking it in for an appearance or a retail clerk who simply could not make the exam sched work.

I always find these stories amusing when somebody voluntarily gets into some activity (cheerleader, model, beauty contest) where the whole point is they are going to be judged on their appearance, then gets all upset ... when they're judged on their appearance.

I don't think anyone minds her being judged on her appearance.

I think the issue is that she is nowhere near fat.

She looks OK to me, but I guess for NBA cheerleaders the standards are higher.

I know some women who weigh 160 pounds whom I don't consider particularly fat. Should they be on NBA cheerleading squads too??

    Heat, kitchen, etc etc.

The bigger lesson is you know the rules coming in and you follow them. Maybe you get leeway if there's an emergency. A chance to rake in $10,000 isn't an emergency. She learned life often requires you to make tough decisions, and she was probably happy with the one she made.

She'd have had a better chance of getting a break if she was making an appearance representing the school as one of its cheerleaders. For a pro gig? Make your choice.

I'm enjoying the image of a someone who hasn't been following this thread coming into it now, and being confused about why people are so concerned about the ethics of a professor fat cheerleader missing a college exam.

I'm sure Shottie will be along any minute now to start another thread on this breaking story.
