    Walmart never should have opened in Chicago in the first place. It took until 2006 for them to even try.

    That's interesting. I never thought of it that way. I live in a super-expensive city and don't earn a lot but non discretionary items have never been a problem for me. Shirts, cheap furniture, is just a mindless click over the internet. I guess things have changed.

    Presumably all of it made worse by the George Floyd protests and the pandemic.

    But it sure does sound like the NRF wants these cities to spend more on police so retailers don't have to spend more on security.

    Customers will bear the increased costs either way.

    The proper retail term is shrink. Shrinkage happens when you jump in Lake Michigan in January.

    My retail replenishment manager wife calls it ''shrink." So I'm guessing corporate does, too.
