Ninety-nine cent Atari games in the early 1990s — long after Nintendo and Sega had eaten Atari’s lunch — made Big Lots my favorite place on earth. I had so many 2600 and 7800 games in 1992.

    “You playing Mario 3?”

“No. Are YOU playing Xenophobe on the Atari 7800?”

Big Lots' problem is they seemed to change trajectory from selling closeout stuff from other stores at deal prices to selling first run items at the same price you can get it anywhere else.
Ollie's has filled that market and does a good job.

Weird as it sounds, Aldi’s non-food aisle has become the place we get our really cheap crap when quality doesn’t matter. They have a nice variety of home items that are just good enough when you don’t need it to be well-made.

A knockoff Theragun for $40, for example.

Big Lots is severely underrated as a furniture store.

Private equity has to be mentioned in the last sentence. When you read a a business story about a company going bankrupt when you get to the phrase private equity acquisition there is no need to read further. The writer has to put that fact as the last sentence to keep the reader engaged.

The day before I went in on a $50,000 cd.
    That's the good news.
Bad news is I also bought 100 shares in a steel company.
