Because I find the broader point of the column interesting, seems pretty simple to me.
I thought others might find it interesting, and it might lead to interesting discussion.

But the broader point is a sweeping generalization that has been proven false time and time again. He's not the final arbiter of quality. Movies push boundaries AND are financially successful all the time. Tarantino's stuff is what immediately comes to mind.

If a movie makes a few billion dollars at the box office, it's good. It may not be high-concept art, but it successfully did what its makers set out to do.

It also takes a while to get past the headline, which grossly mischaracterizes what he wrote.

    And, he misused "plagiarism."

Nobody is the "final arbiter" of anything. You're going full oop today.

I disagree with his broader point that TFA stinks and it stinks because it is limited by merchandising. I think it's fucking absurd. He says in the column, "This isn't to say that it's not an enjoyable way to spend a couple of hours." Soooooo, if it's an enjoyable way to spend a couple of hours, then it by definition does not stink. The rest is all arthouse masturbation.

The Entourage movie stinks and watching it in a big theater with Entourage fans was an enjoyable way to spend a couple hours.

I buy into the Hollywood blockbusters are disappointing because it seems lately we are only getting sequels, reboots and explosions. Newer, riskier ideas seem to be falling away. If Michael Bay doesn't make another movie, I won't be sad. That said, just because there seems to be a paint-by-numbers aspect to summer blockbusters doesn't mean that some of them aren't good or at least a fun experience. The column seems to go into it with negative expectations and he found ways to have those expectations be met. There are legit criticisms of TFA but the merchandising isn't anywhere close to them and not being an avant garde artistic masterpiece is unrealistic with Star Wars.

I have no problem with the posting of the article. I'm just saying your point of view doesn't carry much weight since you haven't seen the movie.

My point of view that it was a good column?

I think it's interesting trying to produce quality content for a marketing franchise of this magnitude.

It is hypocritical to say you enjoyed the movie but it's not good.
Movies are entertainment; if you are entertained, it's a good movie.

That said, the point is not that financially successful movies are bad or some sort of reactionary hipster repulsion from anything popular.

A franchise like Star Wars is beyond just financial success. These movies are the underpinnings of a vast franchise. That burden might have a limiting effect upon the creativity in the movies. I don't know if it does or if it has to, I just find it an interesting idea.

Enjoying Debbie Does Dallas doesn't make it a good movie.
