Well, they're kinda like the same species, ya know. Not quite exactly -- the hands are different -- but you notice Maz never took off her hat/skullcap to reveal how pointy her ears were. And she also made a point to mention she is many hundreds of years old -- just like Yoda.

I just suspect of all the gin joints in the galaxy to wander into, Yoda wandered into Maz's at some point.

Not that Disney cares much about continuity, but Solo and Obi-Wan don't seem to know each other at all in Star Wars. Like, Guinness plays it as if he really *is* a hermit that's been living in a cave for 18+ years. I'm more pessimistic on the Young Solo movie than I am the other SW flicks planned, but even that plays with a Solo in his 20s (seemingly), and he comes across as more of a 30-something in the original trilogy to me.

They certainly can't have Solo and Obi-Wan be old buddy-pals, but Obi-Wan can appear as a shadowy background figure checking up on Solo on the down-low.

Remember, he's supposed to be keeping an eye on Luke, and that would probably include scouting out potential future allies for a "way out" when he decides to bolt Tattooine.

Obi-Wan can't allow Luke to join the Imperial Forces -- he's got to look to maneuver him through more "unconventional" channels.

Remember, in ANH, the original "Star Wars," Obi-Wan hooks up with Chewbacca real quick as a potential ally just about as soon as he and Luke walk into the cantina. It would certainly followed that perhaps THOSE two had crossed paths before -- we know Chewbacca already knew Yoda from ROTS (although we didn't know that in 1977).

Wouldn't it be a hoot if The Last Jedi referred in Ep. 8 is Chewie -- who is revealed to be force sensitive after all these years? Maybe say Wookies channel Force sensitivity differently than other species and it takes a trauamatic event -- such as the death of a 'life debt partner' (such as Han) to bring those abilities forward??

Yoda on his deathbed: "There is another, Skywalker ... oops, wait, I forgot, there's another besides that one too...."

Yeah, let's make the hero of the entire series a character that doesn't speak an intelligible language.

Han Solo can't really be a hero in a prequel, because in ANH he was pretty well established as a shady character in terms of ethics and the law.

It's supposed to be a big surprise when he actually does something heroic rather than just scrambling to save his own skin.

They could show the heroic tendencies and events in his life that led him to a more cynical and self-centered approach to life.

The old EU included a trilogy of novels that told the story of his life leading right up to meeting Luke and Obi-Wan, which showed a mixture of good and bad in his history and his own behavior. Some version of that story would work very well.

Also, while he's a shoot-first kind of scoundrel in the first SW, there's plenty of grey area between that and like, ordering two of your companions to fight to the death, which you can do as a Sith in one of the SW vidya games.

He can be shady and still be "the good guy" of the story. He could be an anti-hero of sorts, or the best of a bad lot. I'm guessing his solo movie will include his early dealings with even more vile characters like Greedo, Jabba and Boba Fett, so a charming rogue who looks out for himself could look great by comparison.

He should probably be more of a Snake Plissken asshole anti-hero, but it's now Disney so he'll be a scoundrel with a heart of gold and be good deep down the whole time.

Modern version of a trailer for The Empire Strikes Back that some guy with a bit too much time on his hands made for YouTube. He also did A New Hope and Return of the Jedi.
