    Interesting story: http://www.wired.com/wiredscience/2014/01/how-to-hack-okcupid/

Math PhD student hacked OKCupid algorithm, so his profile matched up with a category of woman he wanted to meet. Before hacking their algorithm, he couldn't catch fleas on the site. Afterward, he had his pick of women messaging him. He went on 88 dates before meeting a woman he got engaged to.

I was struck by question 3 -- the blue and red were women who either had a sexual encounter with another woman and enjoyed it, or wanted to have one. Some of those percentages are remarkably high.

Not helpful to me, I'm in a smallish area. Nothing like LA. I have two 90% matches online in the last week within 50 miles of me.

My issue isn't standing out, it's just finding a halfway decent fit. My ability to form coherent sentences, select a flattering profile picture, and basic manners have apparently set me apart enough that I could have a neverending supply of boring dates with rural sixes if I so desired.

    That's an awesome story.

Buried deep in that story is that he's 6 feet tall. For those us that are under 5-7, we can hack algorithms better than Will Hunting and 85% of the women on there still won't look at us twice.

Yeah man, but that still leaves that 15 percent sweet spot...

On one hand, I'm fascinated by the work he put in on this. However, it kind of seems like it was mostly for naught. If I read it correctly, it still took him 50+ dates AFTER spending god knows how long developing all of these bots and algorithms, and of those 50+, only three led to second dates. It doesn't really seem like he was beating the system, it was more like he was purposely defying the system and "tricking" it into showing himself off as something he wasn't. He then went on a bunch of shitty to middling dates as a result. I'm no master of that site, and I'm not married or engaged right now, but I feel like my batting average is probably higher.

I am tempted to sign up, put a camera-phone photo of myself after a 13-hour shift and answer every question as bluntly and literally as possible, just to test results. Any interested woman would be terribly damaged or my soulmate. Maybe both.

I'm 5-6 and I haven't found it to be *that* bad. Confidence still goes a looooong way.

But yeah, being able to mark 6-0 is like playing on easy mode, from what I can tell.

And in the end his fiancee found him, not the other way around.

    Still a fascinating story.

True, but he was getting a ton more opportunities than he was before, so all the work did serve a bit of a purpose, even if there was a lot of weeding out.
