A lot of people just like to think of themselves as independent. It sounds cool and smart. Who doesn't want to be independent? If the choices are "Democrat, Republican or unaffiliated," you get more choosing one of the two parties.

Check out the American Independent Party, Pat Buchanan's group -- at least in California, almost all of their growth comes from people mistakenly joining the party when they are trying to declare themselves independent.

Because they don't consider it worth their while. They have work obligations, they have to grocery shop, they have to take the kids to soccer practice or some other activity. It takes time to actually vote and it takes even more time to learn enough about the candidates and the issues to make an informed decision. For many, it's not a high priority, especially if they feel they're going to get screwed no matter who wins.

Remember, everyone, that Obama is going to win big, big, big!

I'll buy that it's not a high priority, but never that there isn't time.

Not with the time spent on fantasy sports, texting, tweeting and everything else that people somehow find time to do (even doing it during their work shifts). If you know the second-string receiver on a team 2,000 miles away who might play because the starter is injured this week, and you don't know who is running in your district, you just have fucked-up priorities. You do, however, have the time to learn.

Next time an election I could have voted in turns on a single vote, I'll apologize. Until then, I'll vote when I feel like it.

Maybe there were a couple hundred people in Florida who felt the way you did oh, maybe 11 or so years ago...

Well that wouldn't have mattered, that thing was pre-ordained to come out one way.

I am not a couple hundred people. I am one person.

Alma did, Dick, on the jobs speech thread. Here is the quote:

"Obama losing? You kiddin? He's going to win - and win big. Big, big big. Beating him up is fabulous business for America's conservatives.

They'll let Obama have his run, polish up Paul Ryan for 2016, and plan a takeover for then. If the power-brokers sit on their money for four years and let the country slide further into recession and ruin, all the better for them."
