The "Magic" is missing

Discussion in 'Anything goes' started by spnited, Sep 27, 2007.

  1. I've never seen him perform "Meeting Across The River."
    That's envy-making right there.

Oh man, it would be a dream come true to see "Meeting" live.

  3. Yeah, there's no substance to the question,"How do you ask a man to be the last man to die for a mistake?" 50,000 names on a wall, and 30000+ on the next one. None at all. Embarrassing, especially if you don't give a fuck..

Although I wasn't at the show, it's not always about how many 70s songs were played (although I made them all caps below, like you did) the setlist combined with the performances, made night 2 in Philly the best of the tour so far:

    NIGHT/ Radio Nowhere/ PROVE IT ALL NIGHT/ Gypsy Biker/ Magic / Reason to Believe/ The Ties That Bind/ SHE'S THE ONE/ Livin' in the Future/ PROMISED LAND/ Town Called Heartbreak/ INCIDENT ON 57TH STREET/ Cadillac Ranch/ Devil's Arcade/ The Rising/ Last to Die/ Long Walk Home/ BADLANDS // Girls in Their Summer Clothes/ THUNDERCRACK/ BORN TO RUN/ Dancing in the Dark/American Land
(Even though its an 80s song, Cadillac Ranch was just pure, insane fun this night)

With night 2 at the Meadowlands being a close second:
    Radio Nowhere/ NIGHT/ Lonesome Day/ Gypsy Biker/ Magic/ Reason to Believe/ ADAM RAISED A CAIN/ SHE'S THE ONE/ Livin' in the Future/ Cynthia/ PROMISED LAND/ Town Called Heartbreak/ INCIDENT ON 57TH STREET/ Your Own Worst Enemy/ You Can Look (But You Better Not Touch)/
Devil's Arcade/ The Rising/ Last to Die/ Long Walk Home/ BADLANDS// Girls in Their Summer Clothes/ THUNDERCRACK/ BORN TO RUN/ Dancing in the Dark/ American Land
(Only tour performance of Your Own Worst Enemy and they nearly nailed it, a wild You Can Look..)

I was fortunate enough to catch it a few times during the reunion tour (1999-2000).
The only song off the first four albums I've never seen him perform live is "The Angel". The only songs off The River I've never seen him perform live are "Stolen Car" (kept missing it on the D&D tour), "Crush On You" and "The Price You Pay" (neither of which he's performed since The River tour).

The only reason to criticize Last to Die is that its more message is obvious than the typical Bruce issues song. And it sure as heck isn't a coincidence that he has been playing that song right after his most well-known 9/11 song (The Rising).

And ESJ, I've only heard "Meeting" twice and like you, I've never heard The Angel. Not a loss. I'm sure that I've heard Wreck on the Highway, but I can't remember where.

Saw him last night in Chicago. Pretty awesome. I thought it was a bit heavy on stuff from the new album, but I guess that's why they're touring.
Oldies-but-goodies included She's the One, Backstreets, Night, Reason to Believe and Adam Raised a Cain, plus the usual showstoppers of Badlands, Promised Land and Born to Run (on which a Bruce virgin I went with who's been to many concerts said he'd never seen that level of audience participation before)
Played a couple of songs I'd never heard before, which I didn't think was possible. One, in the encore, he referred to as "our first great showstopper ... from way way back," as in, I guess, from before Greetings from Asbury Park. Didn't catch the name, but it was good. Was that Thundercrack? And do they always put the lyrics to "American Land" up on the screen?

Thundercrack was the showstopper before "Rosalita" and never appeared on a studio album until it was released on the Tracks box set in 1998.
In Jersey they started putting the lyrics to the last three lines of "American Land" on the screen and at one of the shows in Canada last week they started putting all the lyrics up on the screen.
The versions of "Thundercrack" they'd play at the Holiday Shows (with a full horn section) were amazing:

Why is it on the computer at the office with IE 6.something this video plays fine.
But at home it won't play in Firefox or IE 7.0, giving me this message "Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player. Get the latest Flash player." when I have Java turned on and the newest version of Flash Player.

  11. IIRCm, joe, he played "Stolen Car" as part of a set-piece with "Point Blank" on The River tour back in '79. And I know I saw him do "The Price You Pay" because my date started to cry.

  12. Caught the Sunday night show in Chicago -- very good show, but I agree a little too "Magic" heavy. No tour premieres.

But I'm sorry I couldn't stick around for last night's show. Three tour debuts:

    October 22, 2007
    Chicago, Illinois
    United Center

    Radio Nowhere
    PROVE IT ALL NIGHT
    Lonesome Day
    Gypsy Biker
    Magic
    Reason To Believe
    CANDY'S ROOM
    SHE'S THE ONE
    Livin' In The Future
    The Promised Land
Tunnel of Love - Tour Premiere
SPIRIT IN THE NIGHT - Tour Premiere
    DARLINGTON COUNTY
    Devil's Arcade
    The Rising
    Last To Die
    Long Walk Home
    BADLANDS

    THUNDER ROAD - Tour Premiere
    BORN TO RUN
    Dancing In The Dark
    American Land

    Fenian:

Personally, I think "Girls In Their Summer Clothes" is a coda to "Thunder Road." This time you've got the empty porch in the first verse, the cool of the evening light (instead of magic in the night), and you have the girl going away leaving him resigned and left behind in the familiar old town, as opposed to pulling out of the town full of losers.
