Seems there are a lot more documented instances of perfectly legal voters being disenfranchised than instances of voter fraud.

This is all about preventing blacks and Latinos from voting. Not surprising GOP lawmakers and SJ_Baggers don't have the balls to admit it. Racists seldom admit they're racist.

Same-day voter registration does sound perfectly reasonable. So why is it that Republican legislatures the length and breadth of the country are trying to get rid of it?

    Oh right. THAT.

Early voting does sound perfectly reasonable. So why is that Republican legislatures the length and breadth of the country are trying to get rid of it?

    Oh right. THAT.

Meanwhile, in the state of Georgia, people who've had driver's licenses for 50 years are being forced to stand in line at the DMV for four, five, six, seven hours to show documents to "prove who they are." There was a woman who had to find a copy of her marriage certificate, because her birth certificate had a different name on it.

    She got married in 19-fucking-47.

But yeah. It's easy to get an ID. Just get off your lazy ass and ask for one, right? Because the same Republican legislatures that are making it so easy to register to vote and to vote early are also making it easy to get IDs.

Of course, anything's easy when you don't see the world from any perspective except your own.

For the record, I don't think Mizzou is a racist. His views are perfectly reasonable.

And I agree with Zeke. If you want to have mandatory Voter ID laws, they need to come with the concessions he named.

Attention. The following neighborhood residents will NOT be killed by me:

    Ned Flanders
    Maude Flanders
    Homer Simpson
    Marge Simpson
    Lisa Simpson
    That little baby Simpson

    That is all.

I posted this before, but Chris Matthews said on Hardball one night when they were debating the issue that they should take a digital photo of every voter. That way, if their were accusations of fraud, you could go back and check the "record".

The head of his guest who was arguing against these voter ID laws nearly expired.

Anyone here support the Matthews proposal?

On the same-day registration bit, I'm just not sure what it means. Does it mean I can walk into any precinct, declare my residency/eligibility and then register and vote? I can see that being subject to a tremendous amount of abuse (i.e., buncha folks (of any race/creed/political orientation) showing up unannounced in what were battleground districts or precincts). If it's just a one-stop shopping thing, on the other hand, I'm fine with it.

When I voted same-day registration, you had to show up in your precinct with proof of residency in the precinct -- utility bill worked -- and some photo ID -- student ID worked. Same as that, I reckon.

Well, shit, nine people were turned away and "denied" the right to vote because, on Election Day, they decided they wanted to get a Voter ID and couldn't PROVE who they were. Well, damn, looksa likea we'rea gonna hava throwa the wholea thinga out.

    Really?

    Really?

So people can't PROVE who they are and are denied an ID because of it? This is a problem because ...?

If you argue that voting is a basic right guaranteed to all people in America, then we have a duty to protect that right much like we protect our other rights. Asking people to show proof of who they are does that.

And if you can't be bothered enough to prove you are who you say you are, to protect both your right to vote and the right of the rest of the country to vote, then I'm sorry but you're the one choosing to throw that right away, not the people "denying" you the right to vote.

Also, I'm pretty certain in a lot of these cases voters are allowed to fill out a provisional ballot while they're true status is checked on. At least that's how it works in my state.

Nine people being mildly inconvenienced is better than over 100 million Americans not having a system in place to protect their name from being illegally used in the voting booth.

When I voted in North Dakota, all I had to show was a driver's license. I had a utility bill, but the poll workers didn't ask to see it.
