So essentially every prospective voter who shows up and says "I am John Doe" is presumed to be lying unless he can present documentation to that effect.

Seems to me a "free society" would take citizens at their word, absent evidence to the contrary.

Try that with your 1040 sometime ... Tell 'em you put a twenty in the plate at church every week last year. See how well that goes.

Yes, really. The cases of voter fraud in this country are few and far between. Accurately counting the ballots is a much more pressing issue.

I covered the 2008 Al Franken-Norm Coleman Senate election recount and I broke the news on 66 uncounted ballots from Election Day that were found in the ballot box in small section next to the main hopper. The only way those ballots were looked for was because the number of people requesting ballots did not match the vote totals.

It's much easier to use voter fraud as a tactic for voter suppression than to work towards making sure all ballots are counted, which would alienate the few people who still volunteer to staff polling stations.

You need an ID AND a background check AND have to wait for a period of time to buy a gun in this country. How does that deny someone their rights under the second amendment?

Proving you are who you say you are is hardly putting an undue burden on someone. Hell, I have to show the cashier at Stop and Shop my ID just to buy a Gatorade on my credit card. Are you really saying it's more important to prove who you are in every other facet of life EXCEPT voting?

People arguing that this is some "unfair" practice to disenfranchise a particular set of voters are blatantly ignoring the benefits of the law and the ease in which it can be applied simple because they want to pretend to care about "black" and "urban" voters who could "potentially" be "treated unfairly".

    Give me a break.

(And this is coming from a guy with an Obama bumper sticker on his car)

You don't need an ID or background check to buy a gun.

How many people were prosecuted for voter fraud in Rhode Island the past few years? I'm guessing it's under 20 cases and probably under 10 cases.

The benefits are we get to stop a completely imaginary problem that isn't happening.

While I'll admit this is the smartest thing you've ever posted on this site, it's far from logical.

But, hey, feel free to throw up pretend hypotheticals. I enjoy it too.

    Hell, let's try this:

Again, you don't need an ID to buy a gun and it's legal.

On your first point, apologies, I'm only going by my state's individual laws. I don't know what the federal requirements are.

On the second, I'm sure the number is as big as or larger than the mythical number of people who would be "turned away" from the polls by "restrictive laws".

The right to buy a gun is a legacy flaw in the Constitution. We work around it as best we can.

The right not to have to present papers to exercise basic rights is something that goes much deeper than the Constitution and into the fabric of Western civilization.
