I was told there'd be no math.

    Who's "bitching" about JFK?

I merely pointed out that election for the benefit of our naive compatriot who didn't believe there had been nine documented cases of voter fraud in American history.

Personally, as long as people can verify who they are at some basic standard, I think our government should make it as easy as possible to vote. Give the IDs for free. Do the early voting. Shit, have poll workers knock on doors to take people's completed ballots so they don't even have to leave their homes. Whatever works.

After a few elections in which there's 100 percent voter turnout among the African-American and Hispanic communities, maybe those newly-engaged and energized voters will wake up and start asking why the party they keep voting for at a 97 percent clip isn't doing dick to help them.

Sad thing is you probably actually believe that.

Why strain yourself when you're getting the votes anyway?

No, I'm not that optimistic. There's already too much evidence to suggest that question will never get asked. But it should.

Can't speak for the rest of them, but I said "recent."

There's no evidence that voter fraud has been a problem in recent elections. We don't need oppressive laws to stop it any more than we need oppressive laws to stop (insert clever 18th century reference here, I really can't think of anything).

So once again, requiring someone to prove they are who they say they are is now considered "oppressive?"

Fuck me, I think we've hit a new low.

Really? It's "oppressive" to have to show ID when you register/vote? I'm being serious here, if that's what qualifies as "oppressive" these days we have indeed come a long way baby!

It's been established that my children have a right to public education (I'm not sure that right squares with our country's historical understanding of rights, but that's a whole other kettle of fish). And yet for my children to avail themselves of this right, every year I have to show up with two forms of ID (not just photo, I have to log on and print out a recent utility bill). I've done this for 18 years. I have about eight more to go. I find it aggravating, but I don't find it oppressive.

And we do all kinds of stuff that has no rational basis just so that we can ensure that perceptions among "the people" are fine and dandy. I don't disagree that much (perhaps most) of what passes as "concern" regarding fraudulent voting is just some old tight-ass white folks clucking about the voting proclivities of their not-white fellow citizens. But what those old tight asses are asking is not, to my thinking, out of line.

As opposed to the opposition party, which would love to either string them up or deport them en masse.

Maybe that has something to do with it.

Can't believe I didn't see that one coming. Oh wait, I did.
