There are a handful of conservative posters here who get on my nerves, and one I find particularly hateful. I know some things about his real life that would be hurtful if I mentioned them in response to one of his hateful screeds, and I can't say I haven't been tempted to go scorched earth on him. And if I did, I would hope you'd call me out too.

A guy takes a personal shot at you, by all means fire away.

A guy takes some shots at your political hero and you're upset enough that you use stuff he's said elsewhere on SJ about himself in an attempt to wound him? Dick move.

OK, YF, try to open my mind a little.

Name ... let's try ... five things that the GOP has proposed in, let's say, the last 20 years that would DIRECTLY help the middle class and the poor. For argument's sake, let's say, for people who make $75,000 or less.

And when I mean directly, I mean that nobody above that threshold receives the primariy benefit. For example, don't say that a tax break to a millionaire means someone can have a job. I'm talking about what has the GOP done that has helped the Davids, not the Goliaths.

Convince me why I should be willing to see that the GOP has my best interest in heart.

I'll settle for things that didn't kick the middle class squarely in the balls -- like the insane financial deregulation which led us directly into the Follies of 2008. Goldman Sucks gets theirs, and you, little man, get stuck with the burden and the bill in the wake of a demolished economy. Nice work.

So, if he wasn't anti-intellectual, then how can you claim Republicans have been buying into anti-intellectualism since the 50's?

Reagan is the dominant Republican of the era. He never sold himself as anti-intellectual. He build his political career off of his career giving speeches -- intellectual, political speeches.

Was Nixon anti-intellectual? Another twice elected Republican President from the same era. I defy anyone to call him anti-intellectual, or to say he portrayed himself that way to the American electorate.
