If the election is close, it can matter. If Gore makes a safer pick than Lieberman in 2000, I think he would have won.

I don't think it mattered either way in 2004.

Those are really the only presidential elections that have been close in the last 30+ years.

    He'd gain MC's vote, but lose YF's.

To repeat a point from way earlier in this thread. Studies of polls and exit polls indicate that only one VP nominee had any perceptible effect on an election outcome and that was Palin, whose impact on McCain's performance was negative. The post-convention bounce all candidates get is often incorrectly attributed to their VP choice, which is usually announced as close to the convention as possible.
Without LBJ, JFK probably doesn't carry Texas. But that wouldn't have cost him an electoral college victory in 1960.

  4. Obama again had to answer the question if he was going to keep Joe Biden as his VP again today. Can anyone see Biden saying something ridiculously stupid in a VP debate that costs Obama big in news cycles and momentum? Seriously - would that surprise anyone?

As an aside - David Petreus would be a huge home run with Independents if Romney made the move to pick him as VP.

YF lives in a sate Obama easily wins. MC's vote is more valuable.

If nominated I will run, if elected I will serve. And there will be some kick-ass parties at the Naval Observatory.

Seems we have this same argument every six months -- you'll never convince me that Al Gore would have lost Tennessee, and Arkansas, had he had a Christian instead of a Jew on the ticket. At least as far as Tennessee goes, I know of many people who voted against Gore because they didn't want a Jew a heart attack away from the Presidency.

Who knows? Maybe Starman's daddy is a buddy of Romney's, and he'll just pull those strings of his again.

With all the VP talk surrounding Marco Rubio, I think Bobby Jindal is quickly moving up the list. He had the bad rebuttal speech, but that was a couple of years ago, he fulfills several needs (would help in the deep south and it doesn't hurt that he is a minority) and he is following Obama on that bus tour.

They'll go into the hot tub, but...

A funny-colored fella doesn't help in the Deep South. (Not to mention a Catlick.)
