Chef John Currence weighs in via Twitter.

Times-Pic lays off @BrettAndersonTP Nice job, assholes. Best restaurant coverage in the country has no effect on our tourism-based economy?

From a story last fall by the T-P on Peter Finney. What a business.

If I were Finney, I'd tell those assholes to take a flying fuck.

"Uh, Mr. Mantle, would you be interested in batting cleanup for us at about 15 percent of your contract? It would only be every third home game, though. No, no other at-bats or game time. We wouldn't need you for any promotional events, either."

The Chef's criticism is way off. It's sad they're losing their restaurant critic, but it's not the T-P's job to support New Orleans "tourism-based economy".

He doesn't even seem upset for him personally. He's only worried about "coverage". I'd say he's an asshole.

"Promoting" restaurants, and a "tourism-based economy" is the job of the local Restaurant Association, the Conventions & Visitors Bureau, and the Chamber of Commerce, not the local rag, or their restaurant critic.

I remember reading and meeting Peter Finney when I was in high school (did some stringing HS events for them). Guy has to be pretty old by now.

Ah, the role of the designated hitter in the American League. Great for older guys who legs don't work much anymore.

According to Mike Triplett at http://twitter.com/#!/TripTP ...

    Mike Triplett ‏@TripTP
Just want to clarify that Peter Finney isn't going anywhere. He'll still be writing for Times-Picayune and http://nola.com ...

    Mike Triplett ‏@TripTP
I'm not the best person to explain it, but I think Peter Finney gets to collect a severance package and continue writing on freelance basis.

    Mike Triplett ‏@TripTP
One way or another I know it's a priority for Peter Finney to be a part of the T-P and nola sports coverage for as long as possible.

Maybe Custance is worried about losing a disinterested expert voice in a world destination for gastro-tourists. He says nothing about promoting anything.

Or maybe he's worried that Yelp gives four stars not only to Emeril's and Peter Luger's, but to the Golden Corral of Mesa, Arizona.

He might want to correct this then ...
