Looks like 22 member of the Newhouse family got this letter, signed by several prominent people from the New Orleans area. Of course, the letter won't do a darned bit a good.

Instead of whining to the Newhouses, why don't these prominent and rich people start their own newspaper? Much easier to tell other people how to spend their money, eh.

At least the people of New Orleans are making a stink about it, even if their efforts won't make a difference.

Anyone is free to start a daily paper there or anywhere else. But acting like it's an entitlement?

First they came for the Jews and I did not speak out because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for the Communists and I did not speak out because I was not a Communist.
Then they came for the trade unionists and I did not speak out because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for me and there was no one left to speak out for me.

Folks, you are on your own. Way to support the "craft." I'm a "recovering journalist" so I'm no longer fighting the good fight. Sounds like most of the rest of you have given up, too.

Believe it or not, there really is a difference between "fighting the good fight" and throwing a tantrum and making an ass of yourself.

    Nice Nazi analogy, though.

It would be great if the Newhouses did an about-face, said "Damn, we were wrong!" and kept the daily even if it meant raising the price to eye-popping rates.

    But they won't.

This was my thought as well. If their competing vision for how to succeed in that market i so compelling, there's a good way to prove it.

Because it doesn't cost a dime to criticize.

The New Orleans outcry sort of reminds me of when Borders had its Going Out of Business sale about an hour away from where I live. The line stretched to the back of the huge store with people clutching as many books as they could hang on to, openly discussing their concern for where they would buy books.

Thanks for the support. But too little, too late, folks.

Warren Buffet himself said it: The Newhouses will close a property and take the loss before they sell it.
