In Alabama, the masses cheer the demise but bitch about nothing to read over coffee.
In New Orleans, the masses want continued depth of coverage and are passionate about the product, and the Newhouse family shits all over them, all to prove a point.
If you are in an Advance publication, get out. Now. The sanity you save might be your own.

Times-Pic announced today they would print a Saints section on Mondays and Tuesdays during the season. The section will be tabloid size and will be delivered to all subscribers. It will also be available for $0.75 at the rack.

Definitely good news and hopefully a step back in the right direction.

What do you mean, get out now? It's not as if the world is clamoring for 50-plussers in this market.

Hell, no. You got a job, you keep it. And frankly, the Newhouses have treated me fairly for 32 years now. I don't want to go anywhere else.

At least they've made one good decision. They'll print a special Saints section every Monday of the NFL season:

  7. Commend NOLA for deciding to print some sort of a Saints section, but did anyone else get queasy over the usual management spin in that story, especially by that Mathews joker. "Our loyal subscribers deserve this. ..." blah blah blah. What a load of horse dung.

And, come on, good people on this board, EVERY manager in EVERY chain spews this sort of trash: NYT, LAT, WAPO, G A N N E T T, Lee, Newhouse, McClatchy. ... Oh, and especially "Lean Dean" Singleton. ... Whatever happened to him?

Did they really have a choice?

Not a lot of breaking news here, but this story indicates that most in the Oregonian newsroom are aware that its 7-day-a-week schedule is nearing an end.

Thanks for the link ... that's a good read.

Interesting to note that, when I was in Portland last month, the Oregonian had virtually no ads in it, yet the Willamette Week was stuffed with 'em.

Instead of clearing out the newsroom and shutting down the daily printing operation, something else needs to change when businesses still choose to advertise in print, just not in your publication.

  11. That WAS an interesting read, nicely written. Some good digging there.

Now, why haven't we heard word one about what will happen to one of Advance's jewels, the Cleveland Plain Dealer?

Next to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, I've always thought the Plain Dealer was underappreciated nationwide.

    Stay tuned. ...
