The night watch

    I got up two and a half hours ago . . . because that's when I get up.

    We work early here, on Eastern dairy farm time/European capital time. I write all morning. Read and edit all afternoon. Fast asleep long before 10pm.

    We were in Germany for the last World Cup, when they won it. What a remarkable month of nights in the streets. This year we're back in NYC, but our Croatian friends are going out of their minds. If they make the final we'll go out to the Croatian beer garden in Astoria to watch it.

    And July means Tour de France, which I leave on around the clock. Just to see the colors.

    Picked up a new job the other day, so double grateful this week. Luckiest man alive.

    I hope every one of you is as happy and healthy, wherever you are and whatever you do.

    I enclose the warmest thoughts of the household.

    Now the cat is getting tired of the snoozing. The scratching grows loud. He demands breakfast. I fear an intervention may be forthcoming
