FYI, if you are on the $1/month deal and try canceling your sub before it rolls over to $7.99/month (for one more cent, you could have been verified at Elon's Twitter!), they will offer you a one-year renewal at $2/month with a free sub to the Games section at the Times. As much as I wanted to cancel and get a $1/month deal on my wife's credit card on general principle, I also didn't want to run the risk of losing the six months worth of free access to the rest of the Times. So I re-upped for $2/month. Sellout!!! :D

I just canceled my Athletic subscription because I recognized how infrequently I was reading it.

Aaron Suttles resigned a few days ago from the Crimson Tide beat. Today comes word that he will be writing “exclusive content” for contributors to the school-approved NIL fund, Yea Alabama.

Good for him. Can what he's going to be doing going forward be considered "journalism?"

Not remotely. I just find it weird to work for a glorified slush fund. But he’s got bills like the rest of us.

It's a collective, sir, a collective looking out for the best interests of these fine, young men and women who happen to be sportslethes at THE Yoonivercity of Alabama.

How dare you classify it as a /shudders/ "slush fund."

Bills to pay. Probably getting a nice check. Good for him. Likely will become the next big thing with the collectives.

Was just coming here to talk Suttles because it probably warrants its own thread. I know Aaron a little bit and he's a fantastic guy. Honestly, I think he'll get to do a lot of what journalists love with but with increased job stability/better access/a solid paycheck.

The truth of the business, as we all know, is that the number of outlets interested in proper journalism is shrinking. If that isn't possible, writers should be allowed to earn proper pay.

Absolutely. Good for him. Get your bag, and all that.

    But he's a writer now with a patronage. He's not a journalist.

Sure. It's quasi-PR. But when you've been writing forever and your current outlet's financial outlook isn't promising, as the Athletic COO quietly pointed out, a check is a check.

I for one can't believe the outlet that was gonna save sports journalism is floundering.
