The Messenger is an interesting startup. Editor in chief is my former boss back in the weekly mag days. They had a job opening few months ago for senior editor for women's sports with a salary range between 90-150k so seems like they have some money. But the launch had some snafus and they got mocked but maybe with hirings like this they're settling in.

A special editor for women's sports? Ugh. Like sewing contests and bake-offs?
Have they hired a men's sports editor yet?

The Athletic wasn't supposed to be about breaking news.

Also, tossing around terms like "daily news report" make it seem like you have no clue what you're talking about re: digital journalism.

Today my Athletic webpage keeps switching over to TheAthletic.com/UK. Odd.

Wonder how many reporters they still have from their earliest days, when they lured people from newspapers with promises of freedom from the grind of worrying who the backup left guard was gonna be.

Somewhat related, their morning email digest makes me cringe every, well, morning. From the subject heading to the faux casual tone of the digest, they sound and read like they were generated by the sportswriter version of that Steve Buscemi GIF. How do you do, fellow sports fans? I swear that site is barely worth the buck a month.

Gotta bring over some of that Times jargon.

    Should be an interesting marriage.
