That's the first big-ticket hire they've announced in a while. They lost a bunch in between.

    Transfer portal claims another.

I’m old enough to remember when he was assigned to the Jackson bureau.

I got the notice that my subscription expires next month and it would be $72 to renew. I went to cancel and was offered $19.92 for the year so I took it, even though it's almost double the $9.99 I paid for the past 12 months.

I’m the sucker who forgot to cancel and got stuck with the $72.

My subscription is free because it was a work thing for my ex years ago and the university hasn't cancelled it. Although it pisses me off with its Trump "coverage."

FYI that I went to cancel my subscription today (was due to renew at the yearly rate of $71.99 next week) and I got an offer to remain a subscriber for $9.99...a year. Which means I'm slated to pay two bucks less for the next 12 months than I did canceling & re-upping under a different account for the Cyber Monday deal ($1/mo for 12 months) last year. Congrats The Athletic! A sportswriter barely qualified to balance his checkbook just saved some money at your expense! :D So anyway, check your sub and see if you can do the same thing.

I always cancel whenever I renew on pretty much all subscriptions because I'll almost always get the reduced rate to stay.

I hope it works out for the many friends we all surely have there. But the tech bros who sold out and the Times beancounters who bought this to gut their own sports section can go fuck themselves.

I know this is heresy on SJ, but we can learn several good business lessons from our friends who run college football message board sites. The ones that are turning a profit would never, in a million years, offer this kind of discounted rate. Would agree that this is a very dire sign for them and makes me think cuts could be around the corner.
