I just couldn't get invested in any of the British characters. Even Dwight is more likeable than Gareth. Which is hard to do, find someone less likeable than Dwight.

I'll never get tired of hearing that.

AB, I guess what I'm trying to say is that Carrell's character is a little more believable. David Brent just seemed too much for me. No one can be that oblivious to their situations. And it wasn't until the end when he tells his "friend" to fuck off that we see he's got at least some sense.

With Michael Scott, for the most part, he's goofy and unaware, but you can believe that he's that dense. And there's the touches of humanity with him, like the Halloween episode when the kids come to the door and he's just a normal guy. There are other times too when you just click with him and feel for him. Prime example is the holding of Astrid for the first time. He realizes he has nothing to do with that child. It really hit me too. You felt for him.

Never once did I really feel sorry for Brent. But with Scott I do. So Carrell>Gervais.

And I love Gervais' comedy and am eagerly awaiting his HBO special next month.

I think it's other way around.

David Brent was fairly subtle. Well, aside from the infamous dance, bringing the guitar to the seminar and something else I can't remember.

And while I LOVE the character, Scott couldn't be any more fictional.

No one introduces himself to the new African American employee and proceeds to tell them "where the slaves work." Or puts together the "Lazy Scranton" video. Or holds a Movie Monday during work hours.

If he did exist, Michael Scott would've been fired/arrested/slapped with a lawsuit pretty fucking quick.

And I disagree with you. There was nothing subtle about Brent. I found myself not being able to even stomach looking at him. There was not a single human moment about him. There was never that glint of realization you get sometimes with Scott.

I openly hated David Brent, without any regrets. And not in the way they wanted me to. Like I would punch him in the face.

I agree absolutely, Trey. I've said that on here before. NOBODY is that stupid, he seems to have no clue about the business he is in, how it works, etc. -- this was a problem for me as a fan of the show when I first started watching. No one would ever put this man in charge of anything. I've gotten over it, but, Jeezus, Gervais almost has to be more believable, because most of the time, it's impossible to be less believable.
There ARE humanizing moments with Michael, and those are the only times you can sort of believe this guy exists. The times when they get away from that are the times the character seems really untethered and to me, unfunny.

Yep, that's my take. As someone said once, we've all known someone like David Brent. Nobody knows anybody like Michael Scott.

Then i'm saying it now: I've known someone like Michael Scott. I honestly feel terrible for anyone who has ever known anyone like David Brent. And I wish you had a gun.

I've also known a Michael Scott. In fact, for everyone's birthday's at work, we gave them pictures of Michael Scott and said, "remind you of anyone? Happy Birthday!"

I've also known and worked for a Michael Scott clone, probably worse than Michael.
