Can't say I believe there's "the one." I think a lot depends on circumstance, and that idea that there's one magical person out there for each of us is a bit, shall we say, overly-romantic.
But circumstance can be a powerful thing. And I've been married four years, and dating/engaged five years before that, to a wonderful woman who makes me a better person and with whom I plan on growing old. Circumstance brought us together and I'm glad it did. She and I fit well together, and we make a good team. But had it not, I trust it would have eventually brought me into orbit with someone else, a well-fitting teammate somewhere else along the line.

One doesn't have to be too old to get Simon & Garfunkel. :-[ 8)

It certainly helps me through some rough times, anyway.

And, Flash: My guys give me no complaints.

There is, indeed, that one particular person. But sometimes, due to circumstances beyond your control, you don't end up together.

And sometimes that is because of extreme stupidity, which can be attributed to one or both of the individuals involved.

Not that something like that has ever happened to me. ::)

That's the thing, though. If it's a situation where you can't work it out, that wasn't it. That wasn't the one you were supposed to be with, because when that person comes along, there's no working out to be done. It just clicks.

I've known so many people who are with people they're always fighting with, or breaking up periodically, and I want to yell at them, "Move along!" I'm sure it's possible, but I've never known anyone who broke up and got back together, then wound up in a permanent, happy relationship with that person.

If it's full of strife, and you're fighting regularly, I say cut your losses and keep looking. Life's too short to live like that. My wife and I have never had a fight, never -- not once -- raised our voices to each other. People never believe that, and I know it's unusual and that we may end up having fights along the way, but damn is it nice to live without that shit.

Well, Garfunkel had the better voice, especially considering the stuff he and Paul Simon did back in the day. Otherwise, big advantage to Mr. Simon.

I always think of Garfunkel as pretty much the voice of Simon and Garfunkel. But as far as I know, he didn't play an instrument and he didn't write the songs. That was Simon. And since their split, clearly Simon has had the much better career.

Together they were magic. But I don't feel any need to rip on one as less-talented since their breakup.

    My turn to weigh in:

It's always better to be alone than with the wrong person. Always.

There are many people you COULD be with, but only a certain few that you SHOULD be with. Given that timing, circumstances, etc. will narrow down that field even more, you're really dealing with a small pool of options. But I don't think it's a predestined "one."

As was stated above, finding "the one" is not like finding a key that unlocks a magic door that leads to The Rest of Your Life where everything is rainbows and butterflies. That's where the farce comes in.
